I think @Munky has it spot on. Regardless of intent, the responsibility should be on the defender.

I know im in the minority here, but I also think the same should apply to head clashes, especially when it's a defender racing out of the line to put a hit on.

CHN made a conscious decision to go hard and botched it. The responsibility for a clean shot is fully on him.

If you drive around a corner too fast come off the road but are under the speed limit and hit a bystander what's the excuse?

I wasn't suggesting there should be no punishment, it was a very poor shot. Just that send offs have traditionally been associated with some sort of malice, or at least extreme negligence. CHN's technique wasn't massively off. As Kilkenny said, his arms were facing down. He mistimed it, should have maybe adjusted for Hughes' body angle/height. Penalty, sin bin (with a decent stint on the sidelines) for mine although the material difference was exactly nil in this case.

As to the rest, it's just an extension of the earlier conversation around the "crackdown" (which has been notably wound back from a few months ago). Yes concussion is a major issue, but RL is a sport that will always lend itself to head knocks and simply telling defenders to change is only going to be relevant for the minority with technique/aggression problems (ie, Hetherington, Peachy). The majority of the concussions are coming about due to things that cant be controlled, like players falling, minor mis-timings (which will always occur) and defenders hitting hips or colliding with teammates. Should we be ruining the game as a spectacle (by sending players off or binning them) for what will amount to a near negligible reduction in concussions? I don't think so.

Your analogy is off too. The bystander is a citizen and has a reasonable assumption of not being hit by a car while walking down a street. RL is a heavy contact sport, all players play knowing the risks. A better analogy would be an injury inflicted on a fellow driver in motorsport.

CHN has issued a pretty heartfelt apology today, says he was disgusted with himself to the point he cried in the sheds after seeing Hughes eyes in the back of his head, he has a clean record so gets a discount on the charge. No doubt he didnt mean to hit hughes like that but at the end of the day the result is still a knocked out Hughes. 3 weeks is probably fair.

I didn’t notice it during the game, only going of what I read in the papers. Apparently, not as blatant as his previous two but he lashed out according to the reports I read. He seems to be untouchable even if there was nothing in last nights incident.

I'll tell you what I don't get. Api gets a week for a shove. But chambers can throw someone's shoe into the crowd, abuse players to a point of instigating a fight and takes cheap shots all fame and gets nothing.
The system is so flawed.

Well I thought my last stay in Pialla was 2015. There you go. Go figure, my meds must be working.

Kilkenny and fibro man have been going to the new car park thinking it was the old mental unit looking for a bed for the night .Boys it’s a car park lol
