You take crowds away, the atmosphere is dead, would you rather watch a game with atmosphere or not?

The question here is, if people lose interest in attending games do they eventually lose interest in watching it on TV?

I don't know. But its not a massive leap to say "maybe/probably".

The atmosphere at the ground can certainly add to the viewing experience on telly.

I think for the majority of NRL club games, the future is going to be in a boutique stadium policy. Particularly for Sydney, there is a range of factors contributing to smaller crowds. High housing costs would surely start to have an impact on discretionary purchases such as going to footy. Add to that the lengthy travel times to get to games and the cost of tickets and food, etc and suddenly it becomes a tough choice as to whether to go or not. Then you have the impact of pay TV and high defintion broadcasts. Compare the experience today of watching a match in high definition, 65 inch plus TVs, online engagement with the old days of standard definition on a 50cm CRT. Some of the old games are virtually unwatchable due to what we have become used to visually. The sad fact is the stadium experience has not kept up with TV experience, especially if you are in the cheap seats and the weather is ordinary. The marque matches are a different story when it is more of an event.

The NRL need to find a sweet spot with venues that can guarantee they will be close to sell outs to give the required atmosphere, but recognise that the main revenue is not going to come from ticket sales.

Could we see in 5 years, Eels / Tigers / Panthers playing Friday nights from new Parra Stad.. in front of 28k ish, then sunday game at ANZ St Geo / Souths / Dogs.. in front of 30k ish (intimate mode stadium, 40k seats visable to cameras) Rooster / Manly at Allianz (ok still dogs breakfast)
