NRL and AFL tackle PM over plan to curb the use of poker machines

Correct.

It's time rugby league clubs wokred out a business model that doesn't rely on people gambling away their lives to succeed. No other sport in the entire world relies solely on pokie machines, so why does our sport have to?

NRL is becoming more reliant on gambling, not less. Most teams have bookies as sponsors on jersies or shorts. The commentators now mention odds as part of the pregame and on the fly during the game.

I watch a lot of sport and I punt on a lot of sport, but in no other sport do I see the fixation with gambling during the broadcasts and in the actual commentary.

Even horse racing does not include odds during the call of the race.

NFL would be the number one sport for sports gambling - yet there is no mention of it during telecasts or at the grounds.

Seems to be a particular affliction of the NRL.

O.K., I was taking the piss.

I thought I wasn't,but since you asked me to tell you...

In all intents and purposes, its just an observation with an opinion. You can summise anything I have mentioned that could be a possibility.:)

Phew, thank god you're taking the piss:sarcasm:

I mean, only an insane person would drum up a conspiracy theory like that and actually be serious about it.

thankfully you're taking the piss:crazy:

Channel Nine advertised the Won't Work Will Hurt pokie reform website. Then Gould went on a big spill about how it was the worst policy he has ever seen. Firstly Channel Nine shouldn't be giving one-sided websites on minor issues, let alone a major issue like the pokie reform. Secondly, Gould must disclose any association to parties he is involved with before making comment, especially if it isn't a well known fact he is involved.

I think Gould is also against "spending bans" being recommended for pokies

Centerbet sponsor 5 teams and a stadium ffs

No coincidence that Gould is employed by the team that has that stadium sponsorship. Add to that Panthers is pretty much a casino these days. Gould and his agendas. If he didn't work for Penrith I doubt these comments would have been made in the first place.

No it won't. It will simply change.
The idea that junior sport hinges or gambling addicts is geniused.
This. The days of NSW Clubs needing pokies is gone. That's the reason for having jerseys as billboards, flogging memberships etc.

Plenty of clubs in the bush don't have clubs & survive. The way forward is to get people off the pokies & socialising elsewhere in the club

I don't understand why people use poker machines, but if they want to throw away their money, let them.

I agree. It's not like a group of people can sit in a group around a pokie. Very anti-social if you ask me but each to there own.

Did Crowe keep pokies out of Souths League's like he planned?? If so how is business going??

All very well to talk about community support etc.

What about clubs going around at 10pm, giving coffee and sandwhiches to their regular pokie machine players to get them buzzed, staying up and gambling for longer and longer.

Clubs have simply ignored every other revenue stream because they wanted to sit back on pokie profits. Anything threatens their industry and they have what, 20 million dollar advertising campaigns to go against it?

Comparing WA to NSW is like comparing apples to oranges on all fronts. There's so many more factors you have to consider. Quite an ignorant comparison really.

Please enlighten me as to how the two states are so different when it comes to jnr sport and why WA can have so many jnr's playing sport with no pokie funding yet NSW feels that without pokie funding all jnr sport will collapse. I am intrigued to know!

Like drugs, drink driving, guns, speeding, racism? We've banned them and the world keeps turning!

WA has no pokies yet has a higher rate of jnr sport per head of pop than NSW so go figure????

If racism has been banned someone might want to go out and tell Midland and Forrestfield because when I was working there they were throwing out the N word like there was no tomorrow. Not to mention "no white merkins" being carved into the front foor of my local.

And holding WA as some sort of progressive paradise is laughable. Can you go to Woolies after 6pm yet? Or are people still scared that those big mean ol EASTERN STATES conglomerates might stifle the ability of Dewsons to overcharge for essential items (but justifiably of course because they're a precious WA company)?

Sometimes your thin grasp on the rest of Australia makes it hard to keep supporting the Reds, even though I always will.

Are you aware that pokies destroy lives and only a very small % of takings from Leagues clubs goes back to the community?

That is because they operate on a very small profit margin. The profits are used for the benefit of members and the community - including junior sports.

So you're all for milking addicts to keep junior sport thriving?
Personally I would have them banned from my club. But there is no way that I should have to get a license to play the pokies while I can go out and do other types of gambling whenever I like...without a license.
