I must say I am often amazed at how quickly these players get over an injury. Its now just the norm for players to miss 1 or 2 weeks only for fairly major injuries and everyone has become accustomed to it. I know the players have access to the best sports medicine techniques money can buy and there are people who just heal quickly but the pressure must be on players to be superhuman in their recovery times.

I hyperextended my arm and dislocated my elbow a couple of years ago and it was the pain was absolutely excruciating. I took me 4 weeks before I could fully extend my arm again. 1st grade league players don't miss a week for dislocated elbows unless there is a fracture.

I truely believe many players from every sport are on all sorts of illegal gear. Anti-doping agencies are always going to be playing catch-up, the people who make this stuff are the only one's who know the full extent of the sporting drug landscape.

The only black cloud this will put over League is the one the SMH and other pro-AFL media.

Seriously, the way they talked up this big campaign a couple months ago they thought they were going to oust dozens of people, now it seems they are chasing their tail and trying to pin something on a player without an actual positive drug test.

I wonder if an investigation like this would be allowed into the AFL? What with their "1st offence = cover up, 2nd offence = cover up plus fine, 3rd offence = media release and fine" drug policy.

Howe?

I remember the guy as being a decent prop, then in 1999? he could have run through a brick wall. You could see when he ran the ball up that something was amiss. He would scatter tacklers like tenpins regularly.

Then when he came back after a 20 odd week break he was just a decent prop again.

Positively no NRL players

August 23, 2006 ANTI-doping authorities said today they have ramped up their campaign against doping in rugby league but have found no positive tests among NRL players.

This follows a Sydney newspaper report today that claims the newly-formed Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) picked up a breach of the sport's drug rules, not from a sample but after a comprehensive investigation. It does not name the player involved.

But ASADA said it has conducted a number of initiatives in partnership with the game's administrators in recent weeks, and NRL clubs have reported an increased number of dope tests in the lead-up to the finals series.

"ASADA can confirm that the current anti-doping initiatives have not revealed any National Rugby League player testing positive to anabolic steroids, EPO, human growth hormones or stimulants," the organisation said in a statement.

"These initiatives are designed to deter any athlete who may be contemplating doping or catch any athlete who may be involved in doping," ASADA chairman Richard Ings said.

"Any athlete or athlete support personnel involved in using prohibited substances in any sport needs to know that at no stage in Australian sporting history have they stood a greater chance of being detected and sanctioned.

"ASADA is stepping up their investigations in all Australian sports."

ASADA, set up earlier this year by the federal government, has wide powers of investigation, including data-sharing agreements with police, customs and other government bodies.

This opening couple of paragraphs in the SMH article posted earlier is classic beat up material:

AN AUSTRALIAN Sports Anti-Doping Authority investigation into rugby league could deliver the code embarrassing information on the numbers of players using recreational and performance-enhancing substances.

Drug testers have been hitting a range of rugby league clubs in a targeted swoop both in and out of competition in the past month, and an announcement of a positive test is expected soon. Gauging by the early morning - pre-6am - arrivals at the homes of some players, it appears the ASADA testers may be looking for evidence of human growth hormones or erythropoietin (EPO) abuse.

Of course, any testing could deliver positive results, and the harder they try to find them, the higher the chances of catching out any cheats which may exist. How that comes as a startling revelation to the SMH writers is beyond me.

Reminds me of the beat up a few months ago about Willie Mason who was driving a car whilst on his P's, which was made out to look like he was driving without a license.

After reading some of the crap that Jacquelin Magnay wrote during the Coffs stuff, it does not surprise me that she's sunk her teeth into this as well.

Just saw this quote on foxsports.com.au from Denis Fitzgerald. It was in relation to allegations against Eels players but it seems apt in this case today


It appears ... any member of the public can make accusations (against NRL players) and some media outlets will run those allegations without checking the veracity of them
