NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

So if we go to quarters we get an extra $30 million.

So why not divide the game in to eighths? Then we'd get an extra $60 million.

Or twentieths, then we'd get an extra $150 million a year.

Or eighty 1 minute segments that's $600 million a year extra!

Forget T Greenburg, I say T boob should be nrl ceo.

Those are silly ideas Greeny and not a very good argument against playing in quarters.

Is that really your best argument?

In terms of being the CEO, I would accept the position but I wouldn't last long because the first thing I would do is bring a second Brisbane team in.

And they get a quote from a f**king player agent. Does the telegraph understand how hated these toads are?
I read Gillis quote this way: "I am a slimy turd. I want more money. I will throw kids under a bus. I am a slimy turd".

Evidently the muck raking standard of "journalism" at the Tele didn't die when Rebecca Wilson did.

Players aren't going to boycott origin games as long as they are getting paid $30k to play.

The whole thing is just another tantrum from the same Sydney chairman who go running to the telegraph threatening breakaway competition over the latest thing that they don't get their way on. It's been threatened about a dozen times in the last two years, nobody is listening anymore.

Having said that, the NRL need to pull their finger out and start making decisions on things, they are there to govern, not twiddle their thumbs.

I thought they got 50k a game...?

The players should be striking for important things like no recreational drug testing in the off season

Or extending the off season. The season doesn't start for another 6 months and they are already back in training. No wonder they get fatigued.

All BS in the article aside, are the figures accurate?

How does the administration justify needing $168 million per year?

14-15 financials

NRL Revenue $354.3million ($129.3million non broadcast revenue) Overall revenue up $9.5million on 13-14
NRL operating expenditure $127.8 million (up 17% on 13-14)
NRL admin costs $23.3million (up 6%)
NRL club and state distributions $206.2million (down 4%)

Deficit in 14-15 budget $18.7m (13-14 surplus $20.2million)

Page 89 gives a good summary of how income and expenditure are tracking over last few years

The current agreements expire at the end of 2017, which means if these perpetual licenses aren't signed off before then clubs are free to do what they want. Because its a perpetual license both sides need to get it right, but I don't think some clubs are the bargaining chip they think they are and it would solve a few dilemma's for the ARLC, namely too many Sydney clubs, if they didn't sign.

Ah I see, thanks for the clarification.

And you're right, this may give the ARLC an opportunity to rationalise the Sydney market especially. Clubs would be wise to tread carefully or they may wind up Souths circa 2000.

from memory it was $30k for Origin and $40k for test. part of Smiths goal to see International cap as the pinnacle of a players career.

This was started by a coach nick named leisure suit larry for his propensity to bang chicks half his age up and down the coast, hitting up business associates for bags of cash and keeping things quiet when erratic outside backs hit the angel dust.

Doesn't the NRL need to divert $2 mil per year from to each QLD and NSW Cup team to run its Plantium League and U20 teams ?

Typical short-sighted heartland clubs holding the game down with there selfish demands, you think by now with all that money they get that can manage it successfully. But the don't and blame the NRL for there short-comings, they should blame themselves for there predicaments and it's time NRL save some money for future expansion teams and the heartland should deal with what they have.

It's absurd how many chances these heartland clubs get yet when a non-heartland club is in trouble there calls to kick them out, double standard. If only the Reds/Rams were given as many chances like the Sharks did throughout there existence, Sharks wouldn't' be here if it wasn't for the NRL bailing them out throughout there existence.
