NRL looking to move Grand Final around - good idea?

Superbowl, World Series, Stanley Cup Final, every other championship game that is traveling...

There're plenty of examples of huge sporting events that move, and frankly, if it was possible to move some of the above they would.

I'm thinking each of those sports moves the event to a location where there is already an existing team in that sport, and capacity for an equivalent sized crowd.

The only reason I say no to WA is there is no NRL team there and it is very difficult/expensive for fans on the east coast to attend it.

Otherwise, move it to areas where an equivalent crowd size can be generated and there is an NRL team already.

Spot on

it would seriously alienate the government.

for the reasons you said
the NSW Govt has created this mess tho , by not honoring previous stadium deals. Thats their fault not the NRL's &
if they'd stuck to their end of these contracts , the GF would have been locked in for the next 20 years & the NRL wouldn't be looking to shop it around.

The NRL will get the best of both worlds here , they will get the suburban venue upgrades & new venues done with a concrete plan on who gets them & a time line locked in telling us when
& big $$ ofc , plus novelty in the coming years for the GF with it played in Melb, Perth .. Brisbane .. Adelaide , Auckland

as well as Sydney.
Well Done PVL.. you continue to show em how its done

While were at it, we could move Wimbledon, The Boxing Day test, AFL Grand Final, Monaco car race-lets just make everything about money and nothing else. This game relies on followers and if you alienate them then you might just not get them back. How about we stick to traditions and leave things where they are. Cause you might just end up with every final being played outside Australia (how about Bejing if the moneys good enough)
blame the NSW govt

they didn't lock in the GF when they had the opportunity & banked on the NRL not having the balls to do anything about it

enter ...... PVL

Really the states would bid hard and the NRL would get more cash and the event nature would be placed as a premium. Would be great to see more work go into how NRL grand final week works.

Looks like the meeting didn’t go well!
good on Vlandys for sticking to his guns, not sure derogatory comments about the govt is a great idea though!

Australian Rugby League Commission boss Peter V'landys has confirmed he'll take the NRL grand final out of Sydney unless the NSW government honours a promise to fund upgrades to suburban grounds.

V'landys said the NSW government "wouldn't know an event if they tripped over it" and stated "the grand final is up for grabs."

Those comments came ahead of meetings with sports minister Stuart Ayres and premier Dominic Perrottet, with the ARLC insisting that money originally earmarked for the upgrade of Accor Stadium be spent on suburban grounds.

"We want those promises honoured by the NSW government, and if they don't, we'll take it (the grand final) elsewhere.

"We had a deal. The deal was they would spend $800 million on stadiums, but rather than spending it on Accor Stadium, we wanted it spent on suburban stadiums.

"The government ... is just so slow to move. We want ink on the paper, we want it in writing, and until we get that, the grand final is up for grabs."

V'landys took a shot at Ayres, who yesterday said that if the NRL grand final was moved to Brisbane, then V'landys "probably should move up there, too."

"What I've said to him was that I'd have to if I want to see a major event," V'landys said.

"I'd have to go to Queensland, or live in Melbourne, god help me.

"That's where we're at in NSW. We don't have events, they wouldn't know an event if they tripped over it.

You only have to look at the other states and how much they're investing in events," V'landys said.

"The NSW government has got an event on its doorstep and it can't even get that.

"You see Victoria picking up all these events that are contributing tens of millions of dollars to their local community, you see the Olympic Games go to Brisbane, and what's NSW doing? Looking to get the world marbles championship.

It’s a great opportunity to get the WA govt to put some money into the game here as well as getting squillions of cash out of them. Be dumb to not bring it here at least once every 5 or 6 years. If it does go up,for sale it has to be sold as the premium sports events in the country so states are falling over themselves to host it.

100%. There is an existing capacity stadium with high demand for tickets in each of these scenarios. Stanley Cup and World Series are of course best of 7 home and away series.

Yep. I think that's why he has gone public with the threat. He know's how to get Governments to stump up money for the sports he's involved with, and that's what this is.

I can't see how Wimbledon or Monaco would move, given the events are synonymous with their location and are part of an overall season of sport (rather than a final).

I would not be so certain about Monaco in terms of F1. Its contract expire (iirc) in 2023 or 2024 and due to the narrowness of the track, and lack of opportunities for overtaking, it may get axed so they can take the race to another continent.

It won't happen. They've been saying that for years. It is part of the culture/event of F1.
