NRL on course for TV ratings victory over AFL

I thinks it’s great that masters wrote this article and puts quite a few afl people in there place. But this article was 2 yrs to late. The afl and Nrl is the closest it’s been in years in being able to be compare tv ratings like for like and due to the digital revolution comparing everyone (regionals) has become expected. I’m a bit skeptical though because it was the same at the beginning of the last tv deal and over the 5yrs it coincidentally fell in afls favor just in time for the new broadcast deal negotiations. If the ratings stay the same the Nrl should get a better deal than afl next time round even excluding the SOO series and Kangaroo games.

There only argument now can be ad revenue difference.

I think the difference now will become the quality of the product. Many AFL fans I know are not enjoying the spectacle.

As opposed to most NRL fans who are a bit agitated at times with the penalty count. But the sin binnings have actually been more fun to watch than anything else. I'm loving it anyway.

And if long term the penalties mean that clubs adhere to simple rules like standing onside, not doing stupid things like throwing it into players in the ruck or playing the ball with your foot, the product will improve. Then add in fatigue with further interchange reduction and it will open up even more.

Compare that to the AFL where it is an intense scrap for the ball with zero skill involved until someone roofs it up field and still it's a 50/50 prospect to kick straight for a goal. Even one-on-one marks that NRL fans could appreciate (similar to fullback contests) has become so rare that almost every mark is immediately placed into "mark of the year" category.

For someone who professes to hate the game so much you seem to be doing a lot of watching to know all of that. I on the other hand wouldn't have a clue about any of that. Just saying.

they aren't consolidated ratings, even the STV ratings change a fair bit from preliminary numbers. Pretty sure oztam don't allow distribution of this sort of stuff, particularly when it's not verified.

yeah if you read his thread on it he goes into all of that.

So he knows they don't allow it, but does it anyway? Surprised they haven't sent him a cease & desist letter.

i think it's the specific breakdowns between regionals and cap cities, peaks, peak times and the like that they don't want published, but then overall there is some aggregate data they don't mind having out there.

Why your here. Your thoughts on the crowd numbers given out for GWS, Suns and Lions home games.

Ive always thought something is odd with the GWS numbers - I think they are actually counting numbers sold/distributed, not actually those through the gates, but I couldnt say for sure.

Wouldnt surprise me if the Suns were the same - Suns and :Lions info should be backed up or disputed through Stadiums QLD reports though, and I honestly havent checked yet.

For the purposes of footyindustry, I use official crowd figures only - and since the NRL have given us the method they use for calculating double header crowds - a method that they didnt use previously - I can at least reconcile the data that way.

The problem with using consolidated data - and I do update my data during the season with consolidated data - is that generally is only available for 2-3 matches each week (the data can be pulled from Regional Tam and TV Tonight, as well as ASTRA, about a week after the prelim figures).

I wouldnt know, Ive only been putting the regional data for both codes where available up for the last 5 years.

Then why don't the ratings mob?AFL honchos always brag about the 5 cap ratings ,but regionals take a back seat.We know the population of regional NSW and Qld,it absolutely monsters the regional population in AFL dominated states.
I repeat ,people regardless where they reside are consumers.Meaning eyes on TV screens and wallets for purchases.
Maybe the message will eventually sink in.

There's a story in the herald sun lamenting the poor afl ratings and blaming the schedule, particularly Friday nights, arguing they need a floating schedule to ensure quality fixtures. That's ignoring their main problem, that the competition is contrived & uneven. If you have a competitive competition you don't need to worry about a floating schedule to ensure a quality game.
