NRL on Facebook

Whatever the Eels & Cowboys are doing to promote themselves on facebook it's working because Eels are now the number one Sydney NRL team on facebook with 114,211 likes, gaining about 45k in 3 months.

Cowboys have gone up by 37k in 3 months.

And before people whinge, yet it's just facebook, but it's all marketing.

I visited the Eels facebook page for the first time today just to read comparing opinions on why we're going so s**t this year. And I liked while I was there. So maybe that's the key, play like s**t and get more 'likes'.

So everyone's signing up to bitch basically...

Well if it works...

Doc we had 22k odd members on FB up until about 4 weeks ago and it jumped 30k overnight, I think there was a merge of 2 pages or something so that figure you see now may be a bit false??

Either way, if we could get half that 50k as members then we would be going great guns but people seem to be either ignorant or reluctant to do it. The club really needs to push it though.

Well that was my whole point with this thread to begin with to show that the fan base isn't being reflected at the gates.

When you tally up the number of facebook fans of NRL clubs to AFL clubs the difference is less than 10%.

Converting that soft interest into invested interest should be a key priority for all clubs and the NRL.

Anyone got enough time to update the list of all clubs?

Most of the other clubs except the Storm are within about 5,000 of where they were in January. I only posted the Eels & Cowboys because of the big jumps.

Figured we'd go at this now we're at the end of another season

Facebook Official Page numbers counts at 25 Oct 2012:
NRL - National Rugby League 480,024 (AFL Official 485,110, Hyundai A-League 37,629)
Brisbane Broncos 262,447
Melbourne Storm 196,813
Parramatta Eels 143,375
South Sydney Rabbitohs 110,994
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 109,932
Gold Coast Titans 109,706
Wests Tigers - Official National Rugby League Club 87,076
St George-Illawarra Dragons 76,417
Vodafone Warriors 68,281
Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 67,670
North Queensland Toyota Cowboys 64,830
Newcastle Knights 58,136
The Official Sydney Roosters Page 52,537
Cronulla Sharks 45,371
Penrith Panthers 39,972
Canberra Raiders 20,725

Most clubs have unofficial fan-created pages where thousands of fans have mistakenly followed, which sucks, but those pages above are the official ones. In some cases I believe official and unofficial pages have been merged or combined at the request of clubs, not 100% sure who though.

LU's page currently has 600 Likes after only starting this year. Feel free to like it :)

While I'm at it...
Twitter Official Follower counts at 25 Oct 2012:

@MelbourneStorm 24,435
@brisbanebroncos 23,768
@NZ_Warriors 22,493
@SSFCRABBITOHS 17,908
@Wests_Tigers 16,506

@manlyseaeagles 14,704
@GCTitans 13,062
@TheParraEels 12,981
@NRL_Dragons 12,406
@sydneyroosters 10,396
@RaidersCanberra 8,806
@nthqldcowboys 8,714
@PenrithPanthers 6,956
@Cronulla_Sharks 6,809

From memory Penrith had an older official one @PDRLFC which had 3,222 followers but many of them, if not all, would now be following the new one.

LU's Twitter is sitting on 5,464 - follow at @LeagueUnlimited

They're certainly improved in this space in the last few months - up until this season the Twitter account had been a newsfeed-only thing, in 2012 a few "real tweets" started popping up and from late in the season kickoff, halftime and fulltime scores seemed the norm, which was a big step-up.

From what I can see they're still not at the same level as AFL - leading the charge on using hashtags etc.

I think both codes do really well on Facebook though.
