Each to their own. The NRL hashtags are shorter and allow twitter users more characters to deliver their message. #AFLgiantslions for example is just a tad too long.

The NRL uses three letters for each team where the AFL uses whole names. E.g's "NRLBRIGCT" & "#AFLLionsSuns"

NRL should use words aswell. It's easier for fans to remember and doesn't look as ugly.

#NRLBRIGCT
or
#NRLBroTits

I think long hashtags with names like the AFL ones look ugly. Not sure if the 3 letter ones are harder to remember then names ... The long the hashtag the less you can type in a tweet. Bolded one is not a official one.

The three letters for the #NRL tags all come from what's on screen when you watch on FOX (except Canberra).

Thanks

Current - What it could be
Bri Bris
Mel Storm
Par Parra
GLD Titans
Sou Souths or SSFC
CBY Dogs
WST Wests
STI Drags
Man Manly
War NZW
NQL NQLD
New Knights
Syd Chooks
Cro Sharks
Pen Pen
Can Canb
--- WCP
--- Bears

AFL tags for the record
Pies
Dons
Eagles
Blues
Swans
Crows
Tigers
Saints
Hawks
Freo
Lions
Dogs
North
Cats
Suns
Power
Dees
Giants

Now some of these should be easy & obvious changes; like Bris, Storm, Parra, Titans, Souths, Dogs, Wests, Drags, Manly, NZW, NQLD but others needs a fair bit of thought...

Look at the difference in the tag styles. Every single one of the AFL tags is easily identifiable as an AFL team. Compare that to NRLCanNew or similar. Surely we can come up with some better tags for our own teams?

Again, I think the AFL have it wrong - too long, take up too much space. Short tags are often the best.

I actually like the way the A-League does it best - they do away with the code and just go #HOMEvAWAY

i.e. #CBYvMEL #SOUvCAN #MANvNQL

Maybe I'm weird but all those shortenings are obvious to me as to which team they are... especially when in 5 of 8 matches each weekend, those three letters correspond with the scoreboard on the screen.

It just seems silly to arbitrarily have a naming limit of three characters for all teams, when using four or five would make some names much more sensible. I'm sure people here could come up with better alternatives than just copying the names Fox Sports uses in the score ticker.

#NRLCBYMAN or #DogsvManly

I find the "official" ones are not intuitive at all.

STI is not intuitive, StG or StGI would be marginally better

Canterbury and Canberra both start with CAN which is again not intuitive. The amount of times I've gone to comment on a dogs game and started typing in the Hashtag, and the auto-complete suggestions are #NRLCanSou #NRLCbySou - people are using both and the first one actually makes more sense...

SGI seems more logical for the Dragons (St George Illawarra). For Canterbury and Canberra, I'd drop the vowels, giving CNT and CNB.

As others have stated, to keep the hashtag short, leaving more room for getting your message across.

Three characters is okay but four or five is too many? Seriously?

The NRL's own hashtag #Bringthenoise for fan support is longer than the improved gametages would be.

You get 140 characters on Twitter. #AFLLionsSaints is >10% of your allotted characters. #NRLBRIMAN is 7%.

#Bringthenoise is stupid and many companies (TV & Radio) fail with hashtags because of this.

Masterchief is #MC and would trend every episode. #9BigBrother however didn't so they changed it.

Correct, Big Brother realised anything with full names is fail, and went with #BBAU. Trends regularly.

Suggestion

Get rid of #NRL
Allow upto 4 letters
Do the a-league vs thing
Use mixture of club names, nicknames, club hashtags etc to make it intuitive

Something like

#DOGSvSSFC
#CANBvGCT
#PENvSTGI (or #PENvREDV )
#CSFCvBRIS (or #CRONvBRIS)
#NQLDvNEWC
#EELSvMELB
#SYDvWST or SYDvWTIG
#MWSEvNZW or WAR

Clubs could even have votes for what their 3 or 4 letter tag would be

Ideally these would be the best kind if people were willing to put up with a couple of extra characters.

EELS
NZW

DOGS
REDV
NQLD
NEWY
CANB

STORM
WESTS
MANLY
BRONX
EASTS
GOLDY

SHARKS
SOUTHS
PENNYS
