Nrl plans for a 20 team comp

The Super Rugby Pacific and Super W will see Fiji's Drua franchise continue in the two competitions after the Australian government confirmed its financial backing for another four years.

The sponsorship comes through the PacificAus Sports Program, a flagship initiative of the Australian government, which made a funding commitment of $AU52 million to the Drua franchise from 2019 to 2023.

The new sponsorship deal will run from 2024.

Does it say all up or per year? Is there a similar article on moana pacifica? Coz if you add that all up its seriously money thrown away as much as what the nrl plans to do with png, difference is we are making sure our clubs get a licence fee from the bidders, not sure Super rugby thought of charging the govt any money/fee to keep their game alive thru expanding their SR

It's not $52m per annum.

Brisbane Tigers have an NRL standard high performance training centre and are planning on representing Ipswich,
Loganwolverine-the.gif and southern Brisbane. They already have four junior clubs in
Loganvideotogif_2022.12.24_01.29.31.gif NRLW games have been played at Langlands Park.
Good day for it....

My Preference is a Geographical non-bias Conference that is Split into Compass points Northern, Eastern, Southern and Western.
This is by far fairer solution and will help spread out the Marquee players, whilst also create more local rivalries within each conference, which means more crowds going to those important grudge matches, because they are more valuable wins in the scheme of toping your conference/pools

Northern Conference
North Queensland COWBOYS.
P.N.G Hunters (New).
Sunshine State Dolphins.
Brisbane BRONCOS.
Gold Coast TITANS.

Western Conference
Perth BEARS (new).
Parramatta EELS.
Penrith PANTHERS.
Wests TIGERS.
Canterbury-Bankstown BULLDOGS.

Southern Conference
South Sydney RABBITOHS.
Cronulla-Sutherland SHARKS.
St.George-Ilawarra DRAGONS.
Canberra RAIDERS.
Melbourne STORM.

Eastern Conference
New Zealand WARRIORS.
Christchurch BULLS (new).
Newcastle KNIGHTS.
Manly-Warringah SEA EAGLES.
Sydney ROOSTERS.

play everyone once, then within your pool twice (H&A) top2 into finals

The NRL should expand to 23 teams instead of 20. Those teams should be:

- Perth
- Fremantle
- Southeast QLD
- Geelong
- Adelaide
- Christchurch

And that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Fremantle & Geelong are pretty optimistic, and I think they're a LONG way off serious consideration.

The other 4 (Perth, Adelaide, SE Qld, Christchurch - not necessarily in that order) make sense, and should be teams 18, 19, 20 and 21 if we go past 20 teams.

That leaves team 22 to be decided - which would be needed to bring the competition back to an even number (unless we contract the competition by 1). This would be mid-late 2030s, at the very earliest.

Now THAT would be an interesting decision - so many options - NZ3, Central Coast, another Queensland team (not necessarily SE-Queensland), another WA or Victorian team, Pacific Islands (if their development has come along)....

It’s like Groundhog Day here

same questions get repeated over and over

should be a sticky

Andrew hill has already said the png bid won’t need govt support anyway (png bid coordinator)

But it will give it a turbo charge start like the storm had including building a resort and coe for the club

And on the crowd violence thing I’ll repeat there’s the qld cup.
Given stadium size and peoples lack of cash to spend on a sports club png would have to have the biggest sponsorship portfolio in the nrl to be even close to being self sufficient. It’s cuckoo land and anyone with an ounce of common sense can see it.
But hey those million members lol

My advice would be to stop bullshitting and be honest.
apart from you and muga nobody believes for a minute png is going to be self sufficient anytime soon.
just take a look at club revenue streams and consider the likelihood of a third world country hitting those sales marks.

It's interesting to see how many compelling bids are out there, more than the 3 the NRL needs to get to 20 teams.

That really presents the question of whether the NRL sees more than 20 teams as the future - and if another phase of expansion happens, then how soon would it be after we get to 20.

I remember the last time we went to 20 teams (1995), all the talk from the ARL at the time was that there'd be a "bedding in" period after that expansion, no further expansion for a while.

That would've also given the ARL a chance to see if any teams (presumably Sydney clubs) would "hit the wall" and warrant relocation or demotion, so that an even bigger footprint could be accomplished while keeping the competition to just 20 teams.

But looking at places that didn't have teams in 1995, we now have a Melbourne team, probably a PNG team shortly & either an NZ 2 or 3rd Brisbane team (Possibly western Brisbane).. so even IF the situation arises that makes relocation a chance, there will probably be fewer viable destinations - Adelaide, maybe NZ, maybe Brisbane if Brisbane 3 isn't chosen and that's about it.. yeah?
