Can you imagine the reaction from the racist xenophobic vfl fans if we got a bigger tv deal thanks to an Islamic company? Their heads would explode

f**k AFL journos and fans talk some shit.

The journos know full well that they're bullshitting. I feel sorry for poor old Johnny Victorian who comes up from Mexico and can't figure why no one wants to talk about Australia's game with him or why the blokes at the pub called him a nice person when he got the TV screens switched over to it.

Not to dampen things too much but there isn't much to that beIN report. It's really just speculation on the part of the writers.

yet beIN Sports didn't respond for comment, if they are serious they would be keeping interest very quiet I would imagine. It may be nothing, but beIN Sports have shown to be aggressive on sports rights plays internationally before and the NRL rights gives them a genuine springboard into Australian mainstream market, while having the consequence of damaging the markets biggest sports content provider, fox sports.

Dem participation numbers.

QLD and the Northern Rivers have 25,167 club players, which is the number comparable to the 61,000 used for RL 'participation'.

It's just so disingenuous it beggars belief.

It's almost as if ALFers and News Corp have trouble understanding that people are capable of using google to check their facts.

Don't mistake my comment as lack of enthusiasm for their involvement.

All the reports of interest from the many parties are good signs in my eyes.

I read in another post that rugby league's 60,000 was only adult men but afl's figure's include auskick. If you are really reporting that afl has 3 times the participants in Queensland then rugby league then you should be stripped of any journalism qualifications you have.

It wouldn't surprise me if BeIN got involved, and it got silly. Gulf Arabs are geniused with money.

That 180k is the participation rate. If they fly in Jason Akermanis from Mildura and he fists a Sharon in front of some kids during PE class they count as participants. Around 25K are involved in club football of some variety, whether it's adults or Auskick.

The 60k figure is the club players total in QLD. That's not including touch players.

It's just terrible reporting that takes ten seconds to debunk. TV is a key metric that is completely ignored. Representative fixtures, which are essentially religion in QLD, are also ignored. Membership, something ingrained in AFL culture, is still not particularly big in RL and is always going to be higher than it.

they used the number from the NRL annual report, which is for registered players, not participants through school programs etc. like bs Auskick numbers.

NRL should be counting League players, touch and oztag players. They're all playing Rugby League.

I've recently moved to the Gold Coast and have been pleasently surprised at how little AFL influence I have experienced. I've noticed pockets of influence, some big clubs, however the Gold Coast is a rugby league city.

Not a single mention of a rebel league or code in crisis on NRL360 so far.

Looks like Kent is trying to distance himself from his colleagues.

I played poker at the Gold Coast and Gary Abblet sat at my table just after he signed his big deal with the Suns He sat down I recognized him straight away but no other merkin took a blind bit of notice of him. He played for about half hour lost and left. I told the table that was Gary Abblet. They all said who ? and looked at me like I was a f**kwit.

You are a f**kwit...
