I agree that every move V'Landys makes is now through the gambling lens. His partners at News Ltd are now heavily invested in the industry.

This appears to be more gambling content.

Bruce Hatcher lays out very sound arguments to not change the current arrangements.
He the guy that didn’t want the dolphins in the nrl ? That guy ?

The big issue with having national lower grade competitions comes back to cost.

Firstly the home team would (in most cases) have to stump up more money for ground hire for each round as the venue has to pay for staff, lighting etc. It is not something the clubs will get for free.

Secondly it means additional costs to the NRL for travel, and where needed, accomodation. That is one thing the NRL took on at its formation is the burden of inter-city/inter-statre/international travel costs and associaated accomodation fort visiting teams. They wanted to avoid what happened with the Western Reds having to pay for the visting teams out of their own pocket. This will also flow on for referees anbd touch judges too. This means the NRL will have to outlay more money on this alone.

It would seem they are happy to give the clubs all the games money so I dont think they see it as an issue. Also they are currently giving QRL and NSWRL $40mill a year so Im sure they will claw that back to pay for it.

Lets use GC as the example.

Say the NRL side plays Friday night
Tweed heads play in Townsville on Sat or Sunday.

Those 5 or so fringe guys miss out on 2 days training with the senior squad, Making it hard to make changes. Even for those fringe guys to impress Holbrook to get into the side.

Having every side together means coaches can adjust training schedules or even keep them the same ( If they play on the same day)
There's still the venues issue - a lot of places simply won't want to have multiple fixtures if they're a high use venue or the weather is poor.

That then leaves clubs to find new venues, splits the squad up, can force postponements.

And then there's the cost to clubs.

I’m sure the arlc has actually considered venue availability and it will come down to the extra cost for more teams to play on one day, which of course thee arlc will cover

"ARLC has actually considered"?

This is a discussion on a forum. The commission hasn't taken any formal position on this at all yet, cool your jets

Interesting you mention costs Warriors have opted for the more expensive running their own NSW Cup team

Even Canberra and Knights have the and costly bus trips, If it was better to farm them out. They would do it

Eels played games out of their CoE
Souths Redfern last season, So teams used multiple grounds

As for the cost.

Warriors
Roosters
Souths
Dogs
Raiders

Have all recently came back to the more costly Running their own 2nd tier side, They wouldn't do it if the cheaper model was best

They got rid of the three grades because of costs now it seems they want to bring them back. It could also been seen as a plan by the NRL/ARLC to take over the NSWRL/QRL.

On the surface it makes sense in giving fans more bang for their buck and a day out in being able to watch 3 games instead of just the 1.

If you and your family are footy nuts then you would more than likely have pay TV rather than purchase season tickets especially when there is only one game on.

The question will be if having three grades on the one day will increase spectator numbers at games?

It didn't back when we had three grades on game day.

Seriously, for most matches the ground was a graveyard until the second half of reserve grade, and most of those people were just showing up early for first grade. Attendance numbers were also significantly lower on average despite the fact that the broadcast was significantly less accessible than it is today. In other words attendances were significantly lower on average back then, despite there being more bang for your buck by attending and most games being harder to catch on TV.

That was also long before the highly competitive social media age or broadcasters insisting on a half-hour to hour break between games. I mean the percentage of roughly under 35s whom would bother to show up to watch reserves, let alone pay for the privilege, has to be miniscule.

Frankly, old men with very thick pairs of rose-tinted glasses on are the only reason there's any push for a return of reserve grade or three grades on game day.

For the hundredth time, PVL is paying the Raiders to field their own NSW Cup side. He did it intentionally to dissuade them from forming a joint venture with another smaller leagues club in the region, and I highly doubt that he'd only offer that extra funding to them and not the other clubs.

“I’d also like to thank the NRL for providing the extra funding and the NSWRL for re-admitting the Raiders into the NSW Cup at this late stage of the pre-season.”
https://canberraweekly.com.au/canberra-raiders-to-return-to-nsw-cup-in-2021/

In other words, it's only the cheaper model because PVL is a myopic egomaniac who only cares about what will be received positively by the hacks in the media in Sydney.
