Exactly the players ain't stupid and they see the potential the international game has. It's also affected a bit of RU in nz. Alot of the viewers are turning to Rugby league because of the warriors rise and also alot of the pacific island population in Auckland are watching more rugby league because of Tonga and Samoa's rise. I was recently in samoa and I see alot more people watching origin and nrl because of the samoan boys. Before the world cup most of them never heard of Luai or To'o. The all blacks recent game failed to sell out a 20k stadium. In a World Cup year that's shocking. Now is the perfect time to promote RL in nz while the irons hot.
I hope they sort this out quick
Abdo is a bit ticked off he wants to sort out this cba so he can focus on things like the end of season internationals and growing revenue

if the players just chilled a bit and let him do his job they will get the extra money anyway as the games revenues keep growing

Once the cba is sorted they will announce a regular end of season four nations which they are using to get more money for the tv rights

that’s why the players are asking about potential profits they know what’s going on

That would be for next cba though?

There is a big unknown at this moment

I know full stadiums alone won't make money. But it promotes the game even more than a half empty game. Samoa's performance at the world cup got a shout out from Dwayne Johnson and that was basically a free promotion for rugby league to the other side of the world and bought in New fans. International games needs to happen consistently and if all the island nations are paid equally the better the product is because all the teams will be top quality sides with the best talent. 3 games series between Samoa vs Tonga has the potential to make money especially if you play it in America with a huge pacific population in America.
In order for the international game to grow and make money they need to play it consistently.

I get why they use smaller stadiums. Getting the better players for the islands is the best thing for the international game though

The rise of Tonga and samoa has changed things imo

those games will sell out in Auckland and there’s a potential for a double header at eden park with Australia vs nz

tonga vs samoa could develop a rivalry
(If it hasn’t already) to rival origin

Yep and a Double header is good but you aren't charging double for the ticket prices though.

Better would be Eden Park sold out and Suncorp sold out. Averaging $100 a ticket then the game truly makes a profit

Double headers makes no sense especially when all 4 nations can bring in decent crowd numbers alone

As I said above. Selling out places like AAMI Park, Mt Smart. Townsville etc at $50 a ticket doesn't make enough money.

You have airfares, Food, Hiring training fields, game day expenses etc.

What you can do atm is get regular games on, Strongest possible sides and build it up.

Down the track hopefully the sport can charge premium prices for tickets in grounds like Suncorp, Optus, Accor etc.

What is happening currently isn't working
Nonsense, in years gone by nzrl have earnt over $2mill for a tour to uk and France.

20k tickets at $40 avg is $800k, plus corporate sales, merch sales and sponsors

stadium hire is $150-250k depending on stadium deal
$5k a game per player = $200k for both teams
promotion and others game day cosst $100k
travel accomodation etc per game $50k

how does it not make money? And thats before you look at the value of the games in the tv deals

it only doesn’t make money if the nrl do a sht job marketing it and we dont sell enough tickets.

Back in the olden days cricket and rugby league Tours of England the players shared all the profits

a big reason for the nswrl signing so many wallabies Was the promise of a tour to England to share profits (ironically the early tour lost money and nswrl boss jj gillitnan was bankrupted acting as guarantor for the tour)

for example the 1905 all blacks tour of nz generated massive profits for the nzru and rfu but the players daily stipend barely covered meals and many working class players struggled financially to suport themselves on tour. This tour sowed the seeds of the all golds tour of England which was a massive sucess and the establishment. Of the nswrl

You post this, but want the NRL to take all of the revenue. Not very consistent.

So the NRL is considering playing 26 games over the 27 weekends

18 teams means we jump to 25 games from 24

I see no issue in the NRL wanting cover this scenario in the current CBA. It allows the ARLC to negoitate with the broadcasters

If we go to 20 teams that will be 27 games over 27 weekends

There is a question over length of pre-season comp and IRL window. IRL window needs to be 5 weekend with a final. 6 weekends

We can still do evrything and have 8 weekends off in Dec/Jan

Managed by nrl, it’ll probably be Samoa v tonga in Campbelltown lol

It looks like it took Tonga & Samoa (ironically not the Kiwis) to open their eyes to the NZ market. I'm ok with that as long as we do open our eyes to the opportunity there. Yes, NZ is not Tonga or Samoa but it is the obvious other viable market in our region of the world.

Days after the player pay war erupted, the NRL has been engulfed in more funding dramas, as QRL boss Ben Ikin fired up after a $4m expansion plans collapsed.

Ben Ikin has launched a stinging attack on the NRL and chief executive Andrew Abdo after plans to expand Queensland’s top competition crumbled in a $4 million funding fiasco compared to political pork barrelling.

On the back of the player pay war exploding into a media boycott this week, the NRL has been engulfed by another drama that has escalated tensions with the Queensland Rugby League.

This masthead can reveal the ARL Commission rejected a proposal from the QRL to expand the Hostplus Cup to 17 teams next year following a request from the Gold Coast Titans and North Queensland Cowboys to field their own reserve grade teams.

The NRL claimed the QRL was seeking an additional $4.2 million in funding – on top of its annual $20 million grant – to expand the competition.

New QRL chief Ikin blasted the funding rejection and accused Abdo of trying to place the Titans and Cowboys in NSW’s top competition

We worked in good faith with the NRL to cost-up a hybrid solution that would allow the Titans and Cowboys to have second-tier teams in the Hostplus Cup from next year,” Ikin said.

“It came with two conditions. There would be extra funding for our state league clubs and competition logistics, and the new competition structure would proceed as a two-year trial.

“The ARLC rejected our proposal, which ironically the NRL helped design, but not before Andrew Abdo contacted the NSWRL and tried to convince them to let the Titans and Cowboys play their second-tier teams in the NSW Cup.

“That deeply offended the QRL, and rugby league people on the Gold Coast and in north Queensland should feel just as disappointed.

“Think about that – the NRL CEO working behind the back of the QRL to get two Queensland clubs to participate in a NSW competition.”

The NRL issues the QRL a grant of about $20 million-a-year, which covers everything from grassroots junior footy to State of Origin match payments for the Maroons.

The QRL was seeking further funding to increase club grants and cover the costs of an expanded Hostplus Cup featuring NRL teams – but that will not be happening.

After outlining plans to launch their own reserves, the Titans have been left red-faced by Hostplus Cup heavyweights Burleigh Bears signing an affiliate agreement with the Brisbane Broncos.

The Titans have now lost their relationship with one of Queensland’s premier clubs and pathways and won’t field a dedicated reserve grade team next year, leaving them with just the Tweed Heads Seagulls as a feeder club.

Abdo said the NRL was not in a position to fund an expanded Queensland competition as it continues to assess pathways.

“We’ve been working on a national view for development of pathways, including the second-tier competitions,” he said.

“It’s important the Commission takes a broader view on development. We have the rest of the country, New Zealand and the Pacific as well.

“We’re working with our members on what the right development model is for them and many are seeking a vertically integrated model.

“The QRL provided us a proposal on June 13 with a deadline of June 30 saying they will accommodate two extra teams if the Commission invests another $4.2 million into the Queensland Cup competition. We were given two weeks to respond, with a number of restrictive conditions and a significant funding increase.

“We are very supportive of clubs choosing the right model for development and are prepared to invest in making that happen.

“We are not yet in a position to consider an investment of the size proposed in an ultimatum style proposal in a two-week period.”

When asked about Ikin’s allegation that the NRL attempted to place the Titans and Cowboys in the NSW Cup, Abdo said: “I am having regular conversations with the QRL, NSWRL and all 17 NRL clubs about options and what their plans are.

“Have I had conversations with the QRL and NSWRL about second tier competitions and their view on expansion and clubs? Absolutely.”

The Hostplus Cup will remain a 15-team competition next year and Ikin urged the NRL and ARLC chairman Peter V’landys to invest in Queensland’s rich pathways – instead of trying to crush them.

“In the case of the Burleigh Bears, they saw the direction the Titans were heading and decided to link with an NRL club that believes in the role state league clubs play in the development pathway in Queensland,” he said.

“Unfortunately, it seems that Andrew Abdo continues to push for some version of national reserve grade, which is just another way to pork barrel NRL clubs by giving them more money and greater control of the supply chain.

“The QRL will fight with everything we’ve got to protect our statewide competitions and clubs, and we’ll stand against any decision that negatively impacts on our rugby league communities across Queensland.

“We’ve got clubs, competitions and pathways that run from PNG all the way down the eastern seaboard into the Tweed that create more opportunity for more people in more places.

“We get unbelievable backing from the Queensland Premiers’ office, all the way through to local businesses across the state, who invest upwards of ten million dollars to support the work our state league clubs do in their communities.

“My advice to Andrew Abdo on our competition is – don’t mess with it, invest in it.”

Am I missing something?

Since when is it the NRL's responsibility to organise test matches and tours for countries other than Australia?

Or is this just dribble and drivel from the resident pelican?

Titans are a rabble letting the broncos snap up the Burleigh bears as a feeder team

had no plan b if their bid for their own team failed

obviously the qrl and nswrl would love more funding to expand their empires

with the extra club grants these days why can’t those clubs fund their own reserve grade teams the bludgers

You miss a lot. Abdo himself says he wants it to fund players representing any southern hemisphere country.

“It is important to note that while the RLPA said today that they had not asked for more money, in the offer that we made we had earmarked an allocation of funds for representative payments. For the revitalisation of the international calendar.

“We want to see Test matches at the end of the year and we had set aside a small amount of funds that are the players funds to go to players who are representing their country in the southern hemisphere and these are registered NRL and NRLW players.

“The RLPA have come back to us and said, that should be excluded from the player payment pool in our offer, so there are elements here that still need to be agreed on that do go to the heart of money.

“It might be that we agreed on minimum wage and salary cap, but importantly we want to see the international game flourish and that was in our offer.
