One Community Launch
Wednesday, December 6, 2006 - 4:35 PM
The NRL will today launch a major new community initiative with a spectacular Christmas Party involving players from all NSW clubs joining children from nominated charities at Luna Park.
Using the strong profile of Rugby League the ‘One Community’ programme will work across all levels of the game - players, volunteers, supporters and corporate partners - to make a positive difference to people’s lives.
The programme will specifically focus on improving the lives of children and families who are in need.
One Community will also respond to key public needs by building strategic partnerships in the areas of health, education and social issues.
“Through the One Community program we’re looking to showcase the game’s already strong community involvement and build further interaction between all levels of the game and the community,” NRL Chief Executive Mr David Gallop said today.
“Rugby League has a unique ability to make a positive difference to people’s lives and the One Community program will be an important feature of our game moving forward.
“This program will provide a clear direction for our community involvement so we can have maximum impact for our efforts.
“Players are very aware of their ability to inspire others, similarly they take a great deal of inspiration from the people they meet when they are out and about.”
Using a tender process the One Community Programme has identified four major national charities to partner in 2007:
1. Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia: Funds research, equipment and support services for children and families within five of Australia’s Children’s Hospitals (Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide & Perth).
2. Lifeline Australia: Providing people with access to emotional care services.
3. Youngcare: Raising awareness and helping young people with high care needs and living in Aged Care homes.
4. National Breast Cancer Foundation.
The One Community programme will also introduce several new initiatives including Learning with League educational programmes, a major book drive and a special awards night to recognize the efforts of volunteers and players who go above and beyond the call of duty with charity work.
At the same time the NRL and players will maintain existing relationships with an extensive array of charity programmes.
Today’s party will see a visit from Santa Claus and gifts for all children.
The three Queensland teams will host similar functions at Dreamworld next Tuesday 12 December and the Melbourne Storm will take Christmas Cheer to the Royal Melbourne Childrens Hospital next Wednesday 13 December.
