NRL wants two conference comp

The North Sydney Bears Facebook page has shared an article from the Daily Telegraph that proposes a two-tier competition with promotion/relegation, as an alternative to conferences.

14 team NRL - everyone plays everyone else twice, 10 team 2nd division "Championship" below it.

I wonder if that means Newscorp are advancing it. Maybe as a soft way towards a Superleague? Wasn't 14 teams their desired size for the top tier in the 1990s?

Promotion/relegation won't happen in rugby league. That's fairy tale stuff if anyone believes it.

No way nrl could afford to fund 28 professional clubs, second division would need significant funding so the gap wasn’t huge, no way tv would want to screen two divisions, no way the current 16 clubs are going to vote for it, no way the nswrl and qrl are going to agree to their premier comps being relegated even further in relevance, another load of slothfield nonsense lol

Can't wait to watch the GF between the Eastern Conference winner and the Eastern Conference winner.

It is a great idea and better than conferences and it is possible though not probable. It is arguably a better way to expand than conferences.
It doesnt have to be 14 top teams and 14 second division.
It could be 12 top division teams and 8 second division team or 14 and 6 for that matter.
The down side is weak clubs could die but the flip side of that is maybe they should so that the strong clubs can thrive.

Yep, it just seems like setting it up for 3 classes - teams that are always in the top tier, teams that are always in the second tier, and a handful that "yo-yo" between the two.

That is a description of the NRL premiership as it is now. Fans are aware of rebuild years that are coming for their club as it is and they stay around for the good time. Just do your rebuild in second division where you actually could win games.

no they should announce now a 5 year plan for the introduction of the west coast Pirates as the games 18th club!

We are talking about different "theys" I think.
You are talking about the NRL as "they".
I am talking about the Perth interested parties (PIP)as "they".

My suggestion see's the PIP take control whereas yours has the NRL in control and we have seen how that has gone for you.

The first year you could go 16 in first div and 6 in second with fore knowledge that the bottom 2 drop to seconds with no promotion. Then the promotion relegation starts the following year.

Instant 6 team second div
Perth
Brisbane 2
Auckland 2
Central Coast
Western Suburbs Magpies
North Sydney Bears

I'd be adding a few more Qcup sides to that, mainly your PNG hunters, and then Kaiviti (Fijian)Silktails
And who is central coast?
Why not have a promotion/relegation only for these 2nd tier clubs? If down the track they seem viable and promotion to 1st tier becomes permanent, no way NRL drops any of their current brands, to a lower tier, but a comp per year at the beginning of the season featuring only expansion areas would be fantastic to watch, just seeing who wins getting a look in for the 18th licence

Not quite. The proposal in the Telegraph has the 2nd tier competition with a lower salary cap than the top tier, which makes rising out of the 2nd tier a lot tougher.

In the current system, all 16 teams have the same cap, so *theoretically* they should be about as strong as each other - well, as far as a roster goes.. and easier for natural cycles to happen (teams will rise and fall, then rise again)

The Telegraph proposal has the following:

NRL - 14 teams
Current teams minus Bulldogs & Tigers
Every team plays each other twice
$10m salary cap

Championship (2nd tier)
Bulldogs
Tigers
Norths
Newtown
Central Coast
NSW Country
Wellington
Brisbane 2
Mackay
Perth
$4m salary cap

With 1 team promoted, 1 team relegated each year.

why as a successful businessman would I want to give my hard earned to a Sydney club to bring a few games to perth? That doesn’t get us any closer to a perth club.

Norths, Newtown and NSW Country before Adelaide is f**king laughable, yet not a surprise at all.

This idea of Sydney orientated supporters that selling a couple of games to unrepresented cities counts as expansion is absolute dribble.

as a fan whose club has yo yo’d with promotion and relegation in SL I can tell you it is a disastrous model! Clubs coming up don’t have time to build a decent squad and are whipping boys likely to go straight back down in a worse financial state, and clubs going down have sponsors and fans abandon them and end up broke if they can’t get get back up within a year or two. It simply doesn’t work when the financial gap between divisions is huge, which it would be here.
