NRL's growth mindset points to 18th team. And it ain't Perth.

Move "Sydney" to Adelaide.
This, i agree with wholeheartedly

8 Sydney clubs
5 in QLD (bronx, Jets, Dolfns, Tits, Cows)
1 Perth Western Bears
1 Adelaide Rorters
1 Melbourne Strom
1 Newcastle Knights
1 Canberra Raiders
2 Nz (South Pacific Cyclones, Auckland Warriors)

Incorporating an idea from the Bears thread, how does this sound?

2023 - Brisbane 2 (Brisbane Jets) added.
2024 - Perth Bears added

2026 - A Sydney team relocates to Adelaide

2029 - NZ 2 (Southern Kea, based in Christchurch) added
2030 - Brisbane 3 (Brisbane Dolphins) added.
I actually think the dolphins will get in ahead of the jets, right now money is important, if a club can self sustain itself during this covid period, its going to go a long way to helping which ever bid gets the licence, for instance lets say God forbid another pandemic style issue arises, and suncorp without crowds becomes too expensive to use, dolphins have their stadium to use without crowds, Jets and Firehawks still have to pay rent to an empty suncorp, i doubt NRL will have plan B for these two bids, Dolphins already are ahead of both bids purely on structure and assets of the club backing them.
I dont see Nick Livermore sticking around or staying rich after the jets bid gets up or the club hits hard times, leaving another wolfpack style problem, even the Newcastle knights went thru that crap with Tinkler

Fair points. So, Dolphins & Perth Bears this phase of expansion then NZ2 & Brisbane 3 (something skewing west/south) at the end of the decade - and one Sydney team to move to Adelaide then?

You didn't sneak into the SFS to watch the Chooks by chance? - used to see a few of your fellow supporters at these games. Maybe they were considering crossing Anzac Parade from the dark side of the South side to the bright lights of the East side. :)
The only time I watch the Bondi Nuggets is when they are playing (and losing to) Souths. You couldn't pay me enough to go to any other Nuggets games.

Now there's a footprint that will bring money into the game.

Something like that would be great, but I think Dolphins and NZ2 will be the next two teams. I hope Dolphins use the name Moreton Bay.

If Canterbury keep struggling they should consider relocating to Christchurch. The Bulldogs' slide came just after Newcastle bought their way out of the cellar. Could it be that NSW is so oversaturated it cannot prop 10 competitive clubs?

Bulldogs in Christchurch would make it easier to recruit players. They'd have all of South Island and the Pacific to recruit from. At the moment they're only getting fringe 1st graders that were discarded by other clubs.

As long as the Sydney based teams are spread out and aren't overlapping or congested in certian areas of sydney there's no reason they cannot all be there, trouble is there are clubs that have areas that they doing nothing with, or clubs that have bugger all areas and just poach heavily off others, both not really advancing the league in any metrics regarding memberships, junior participation or crowds.
People generalise certain clubs, and that end up getting a media stigma, which everyone flocks too and uses them as facts, which is incorrect, just because a club is successful in premierships and consistency in finals doesn't mean they are vital to sydney or the league overall, ive always said two clubs i see as useless are roosters and manly, nice to haves, but not nessesary.
If they both go thru rough patches they won't keep up with the rest of the metrics of the league, where clubs like Parramatta or Canterbury can be on a drought and still service there members, juniors and catchment regardless. this is more valuable to the league than winning on field

Absolute nonsense.

Absolute nonsense.

yes and no. It’s nonsense because bulldogs have a large jnr base, decent fanbase and are financially ok because of pokie revenue. Whilst they have one of the bigger fanbases in Sydney they do overlap areas with tigers, I wonder if bulldogs did go to Christchurch, they won’t but fun to play hypotheticals, a rebranded western Sydney Tigers playing out of a new bankwest stadium in Liverpool could represent the bulldogs traditional regions as well? Could the WS Tigers become a super club to challenge likes of Eels, Souths, broncos and Storm?

It's by invitation only to see the Chooks games in any case and like on Fawlty Towers Gourmet Night Episode- No Riff Raff allowed i.e none of those from the other side of Anzac Parade.

Seem to be contradicting yourself as you said - used to see a few of your fellow supporters at these games.

Souffs a super club??? - they have no income producing/revenue generating assets to speak off - if Crowe and Packer pull out backing them and propping them up and they have a couple of poor seasons - they could be goneski again.

If anyone has to relocate they would be a strong candidate. - Perth Rabbitohs or merge with Dragons and Sharks and become Southern Sydney Illawara

That was after you were re-admitted - we felt sorry for you before that - discounted entry and on concessions as after all you are from an area what one of your supporters described as struggle street.

one of biggest active fanbases (biggest membership base in 2020) in nrl, one of the most recognised Australian sports brands, strong corporate sales and my understanding is they are making an annual profit without pokies, or Crowe putting in any more cash. They’re attendances need to be improved but playing at shtty ANZ is a massive issue for that.

Not sure if that's correct - most AFL clubs are much more recognised as well as having double/triple the membership numbers. Broncos have the most members though.

I am sure Crowe and Packer put their hands in their pockets each year- for how much longer though is the question.

A few poor seasons and memberships and crowds drop in numbers and sponsors jump ship - no income generating assets

What would happen if Manly Sea Eagles and Sydney Roosters relocated to regions that will appreciate them, with a brand new club introduced to represent the CBD, North Shore and Northern Beaches?

The new team could be the North Sydney Bears.

Great post!

I cannot help but think some Sydney clubs could be huge if they didn't have so much competiton on their doorstep.

I don't see why Wests cannot take over the Canterbury region and St George do the same with Sutherland. I know fans will be lost to the game, but if it leads to Tigers ane Dragons averaging 25k each in 20 years time then the game will be stronger.

You mean just like Uncle Nick? How long will the Nuggets last if something happens to him?

Only time Uncle Nick put money into the Chooks was when he sponsored them under his City Ford group of Companies which he no longer owns - in fact he has set up the club in such a way it will have close to 500 million plus and growing worth of income producing and revenue generating assets under the Easts Group.
