It seems the move away from an international Super comp has done wonders for NZ crowds this year and the NZRU are about to get a NZ$387million war chest from selling a stake in the game to US investors. A chunk of that will flow through the game to the provinces. You really think the NRL can compete?

Yes they are getting a big cash input but the deal as far as I know is 12.5% stake in total revenue not profit. So for a loss making enterprise like the NZRU to have 12.5% of revenue annually taken out its almost like a really high interest loan that will be perpetual. Assuming that they will invest some of the NZ$387M in non rugby area's, in time they will burn through the rest of it. Personally would be weary of that deal and would not support the NRL going down that part. Avoid it if you can so to speak.

I don't proclaim to be an expert in the field, but looking at NZRU 2019 total revenue 187m. 12.5% of that is 23.38m. Thats a 6% return on investment, not bad at all. Maybe NZRU are selling themselves a bit short.

Plus, if NZ Rugby got smart about All Blacks eligibility & allowed NZ players to play for Australian Super Rugby teams and still qualify for the All Blacks.. then that would pretty quickly bring the Aus teams up in quality, and make the competition very interesting.

That'd also save them from a ton of their players moving to France or Japan, but they and the ARU aren't smart enough to do that.

It's not JUST stadium quality, it's the city's culture too - Christchurch & the Canterbury province as a whole is a powerful force in NZ sport, with an established & storied rivalry with anything from Auckland.

yeah Wellington to me seemed like a city run by Uni students, big into arts and food. I am not sure League would be successful there... a south island/Christchurch team would be better

I think it's the rural slant that Christchurch & Canterbury (the province) has - they may not be able to compete so much culturally with Auckland & Wellington, but sport is their big thing where they can stand up against any other city & take them down a peg or two.

The prospect of a covered stadium there is crucial, as the games would need to be twilight or evening games for Aussie TV timeslots but cold mid-winter nights in an uncovered stadium here is NOT conducive to crowd comfort.

Exactly what I was thinking and hoping for. It will be a great little stadium that will change footy in Christchurch and hopefully convince the Pollies in Auckland to get their finger out and build the City Stadium that Auckland and NZ is in desperate need for. NZ is as bad as what Australia used to be when it comes to designer rectangular stadiums. They are a hotchpotch of mixed use stadiums that don't suit anyone that likes atmosphere and intimacy when watching rectangular football codes. It needs to be fixed yesterday.

Bit like here, once they start they cant then justify knocking down and starting again. I remember back in 2000 Burswood Casino was supposed to build a rectangular stadium where the new arena is in the city as compensation for pulling down the Burswood dome, but never happened (some shady dealings). Then there was talk of a new rectangular stadium alongside the AFL stadium when that eventually was built to replace nib, but never happened. And now they've spent $150mill on HBF park they wont consider building a new stadium in the next 25 years unfortunately. There's a perfect spot right next to Optus stadium that would benefit from all the infrastructure they spent on the precinct area. One day, just not in my lifetime sadly.

Auckland should have a 40-50k proper modern rectangular stadium though. Would be a big plus for union, league and soccer.

35 pages to this thread so it's probably been raised previously: The people of PNG absolutely love rugby league. I reckon it would be an incredible shot in the arm to bring a PNG team into the competition.

It's a sports-mad city of ~2 million with a significant proportion of East Coast diaspora who would form an adequate launching pad for an NRL team.
The demand has outstripped the supply in the AFL to the point that they are considering starting up a third team there.
PVL needs to let go of his petty and self-destructive rivalry with the "rusted-on AFL states" and do what's best for the game.

Just to put the cat amongst the pigeons: what about a second division, with each division having twelve clubs? Each side in both divisions play each other side twice each year. At the end of each season the bottom four teams from division one get relegated to second division and the top four teams from division two get promoted to first division. Split the JV clubs and bring in some new teams. So the second division comp starting 2022 would be made up of Tigers, Wests, Broncos, Cowboys, Bulldogs, Illawarra, + say: Perth, PNG, Central Coast, Brisbane 2, Fiji, Tonga.

you're not wrong; yes they do have rocks in their head and yes Perth is more than a great opportunity to grow the game.
