NRL's growth mindset points to 18th team. And it ain't Perth.

Nothing more hypocritical than applauding Dolphins linking up with PNG whilst denigrating the idea of Perth doing it!

Do they? Who hasn't been able to get a visa to play for an NRL club? Anyone?

Where has Dolphins linked with PNG?

Keep up!

Providing a pathway is different than relying solely on them.

This is why Redcliffe is applauded

Those PNG players will be added to an existing pathway...Assuming they are good that is

haha thats some spin. Where has anyone said Perth should rely solely on PNG?
I've suggested doing same as what Dolphins are doing but going a step further and investing in their elite jnrs as well. But nah thats not ok for Perth but is ok for heartland clubs? Hypocrites.
I've also suggested we link up with Tigers or similar in QRL cup and get serious about participation and growth of our own jnrs and systems in WA. If we did those three things wed be generating more than enough talent for a WA team without leaning any more or less than other clubs do on signing players from elsewhere. We also have the advantage of having an entire 26 clubs in the State sitting under just us. The potential is there.

You think players 20-36 in the squad will develop in Perth with no quality 2nd tier footy?

Not sure what you mean? Perth will have a side in NSW cup or QRL cup as well as hopefully partner arrangements with at least 1 if not 2 clubs in those comps already. We'll have 26 WA clubs feeding Jnrs into our elite development systems plus players in other states/countries. The answer to the problem is always there if you look for it.

There's 3 clear problems with Perth that we need to find answers on:
1. Player development (see above)
2. Improving corporate facilities at HBF Park (see supportive Govt)
3. A CofE/HQ befitting the game and an NRL club (see supportive Govt)

Hey, ill be ok with it once perth earns a 1st grade license, but if you want to build a inaugural squad out of them, then why bother with perth, just hand the license to png

We will sign an inaugural squad exactly same way as dolphins have done despite the strength of their reserves and jnrs.
PNG does not have 25 nrl first graders ready to debut lol

Planning what?

A good pathway for starters, I notice WA have an u15's squad but aside from that?

That is the sort of age you want to work on so in 5 years when expansion happens again, You have some young guys ready to go into a squad. Then you don't have the homesick players that NZ seem to be having now

Been saying it since 2011! You'll get no argument from me! The NRL fund NRLWA $750k a year and we have 5 staff inc DO's for a state our size of 2.5million people! If it wasnt for Peter Cumins we'd have no elite systems.
We currently have a high school scholarship program, an U15's region based elite system and the U18's SG Ball system.
you can find our strat plan, which runs out this year, here. Be interesting to know what of it was achieved.

One thing the NRL is terrible at is strategy and planning. They'll probably parachute Bears in as the solution of that lack of planning and end up with a clusterfck of a club. sigh.

Trouble is and always has been (PR has mentioned this many times) that when these juniors come of age they get pickup by east coast clubs, which is why I've said before bears are a great idea for WA, less likely to get them lost and 1st grade presence starts off straight away, either them or easts firehawks etc, a club thats ready to go basically, then you can see growth from both ends till perth becomes just like all the other clubs,

right now starting from scratch will take a decade, before seeing any type of competitive squad coming from beneath any sort of 1st grade presence that doesn't resemble the titans

If they go East now, Have family back in Perth. Then they will go back once the Perth side is in.
Dolphins had a big swing and couldn't get most guys to move to QLD, Getting guys to move to Perth will be even harder. That is why getting Perth locals ready is key.

Where are the locals to put in the squad like Dolphins have?
Dolphins are one of the strongest second tier clubs in the country. How many locals are in the 30 man first team squad? We could always ask for our WA Jnrs currently in NRL squads back and we'd have more!

Its stupid to expect an expansion club to be able to have the same systems from day one as an established heartland club. That doesn't mean you cant build them. Should have been happening years ago in WA and SA but the NRL continues to dither and knee jerk when it comes to expansion strategy and grassroots planning.

I think at last count we had 4 players in NRL squads and around 15 in second tier. Point remains Dolphins went out and signed a full first team squad from exisitng players, and half a reserve grade squad as well. Last count there was only three players signed from the Dolphins system and they are on development contracts, not starting 30.
Its unrealistic to put it on Perth to have anything like an NRL ready group of players in first few years. The best move east or to Union and arent sitting around in the NRLWA hoping we may one day get a team.
Linking with PNG will long term be of great benefit to both partners and linking with an established QRL cup club will provide a quicker return, alongside having our own improved pathways and reserve grade side.
The only alternative is to not expand ever outside the heartlands or parachute existing second tier clubs into new markets, which I can see will not end well.
How has the AFL's systems in NSW gone? I know they've spent a lot on an academy etc. Is there many NSW developed players in the AFL?
