NSW carrying Australian cricket

IF you needed any more evidence that NSW is carrying this nation's cricketing hopes, look no further than Australia's new one-day international squad announced yesterday.

"Queenslander" Peter Forrest was a key selection, but he grew up in Windsor and played his junior cricket for Hawkesbury.

Tasmania alone have six Blues imports who would walk into a second NSW team.

Ed Cowan attended exclusive Sydney school Cranbrook and played for the Blues before heading to Tasmania and earning a Test call-up.

He plays alongside fellow NSW-bred players Steve Cazzulino, Jason Krejza, Brendan Drew, Jackson Bird and Rhett Lockyear for Tasmania.

South Australia claims Dan Christian as one of its own, as well as other young Blues Tom Cooper and Aaron O'Brien.

Christian will play in the Twenty20 international at ANZ Stadium tomorrow night but was a promising junior rugby league player at St Gregory's College alongside the Storm's Ryan Hoffman.

Cricket NSW chief executive David Gilbert holds no grudges.

"All we're missing is a keeper, although Tom Cooper could do the job," Gilbert said.

"For Peter, the move to Queensland has been very good for him. We're disappointed he left, but his game has certainly developed over the course of this year, so full credit to him."

Forrest knew it would be tough to cement a spot with Phillip Hughes, Usman Khawaja and David Warner vying for Test places this time last year.

"It was a no-brainer," Forrest said about linking with Queensland. "I remember the last time I got dropped and I remember my (one-day) stats.

"I was averaging 41 and striking at 88 (per 100 balls) and that still wasn't good enough to get in the team. It was extremely frustrating.

"I think they saw me as a top-order player, but when you have guys like Hughesy, Khawaja and Warner, and Simon Katich, who all bat up the top, it was hard to find a spot.

"I don't hold anything against NSW. They have a wealth of talent down there and I wasn't good enough to crack it."

The Sydney Sixers, who are made up of predominantly Blues-contracted players, proved the good times show no signs of slowing down in NSW when they won the inaugural Big Bash League on Saturday night against the Perth Scorchers.

Only thing is Henriques was coming through at a time when we were looking for the elusive all rounder

Not really. Henriques when he was younger was so much faster than everyone else even in grade he had tge extra zip but once he made first class cricket his pace is pretty much slow. Cazzulino was always the better bat. Good technique. Could bat an entire day in grade. I watched him make a huge century one day, 130 odd in the day it was a superb innings. I haven't watched him in shield but he seems to be doing alright.

Henriques needs to drop the bowling and stick with batting. He's a good bat but wasting his time with bowling IMO

I guess it's different since I've heard the Henriques hype since we were about 10.

I dunno, I think Henriques does best batting at 6 and bowling 10 overs or so an innings. His bowling average of 30 is pretty solid.

I suspect he'l never quite crack that next level after first class though

Seems the best place to post it

Jaques is going to retire after this season from Australian cricket and take up a position at Yorkshire CCC as a local player, thanks to his British passport.

Shame, although his form the last couple of years has been poor, thanks to injuries. Shame he has been struck by those injuries, 3 tons in 11 tests and could've had a much more substantial career if not for his injuries.

the only well perfomred nsw player in the test team though is michael clarke. siddle and pattinson are two of the best fast bowlers in the world.

He's economical but at best he's a decent first class bowler. Whenever he gets a game he is 2nd or 3rd change anyway.

He'll never get a decent run as a 6 who can bowl because he doesn't out right excel in either and he isn't pretty good at both, at best he's a decent bowler and has the ability to score runs occassionaly. He'd be much better concentrating on batting and improving the 30 batting average without worrying about bowling, imo anyway.

I'd love to see him do well but I doubt he ever will. He's go IPL money and a friggin high school field named after him and he has hardly done anything.

Sadly I think his bowling is his biggest asset (fc anyway). If he could score the odd ton and get the batting average up 10 he's be a very handy 6. Without the bowling atm he doesn't justify a spot in the Blues side and even then he barely does when we're missing a few players. I don't really think bowling is costing his batting that badly. Certainly not so much that he'd miraculously start scoring tons if he dropped it completely. With the bowling he's average, without it he'd be a complete nuffy.
