Good to see the Dogs have a competitive team as usual. Should be a good comp this year Berries for Life ! Thought Windsor would have come closer. Though it's trial time still, Penrith Panthers/Windsor are usually hard to beat.

I heard that Sevanaia Koroi who is a Fijian centre on trial with the Wests Tigers will probably end up playing NSW Cup for Western Suburbs.

From Fijian Times:

Koroi chases NRL dream

RODNEY DUTHIE
Monday, January 07, 2008

FROM local competitions to the superdome of rugby league, Fiji Bati Sevanaia Koroi will rub shoulders with some of the game's greatest players.
The Nadera Panthers centre is in Australia attending a trial run with the National Rugby League heavyweights, the West Tigers.
The villager Burenitu, in Ra, marches into the Tigers camp today and will be joined by fellow Bati Tomujani Koroi.
"I am really happy with this opportunity I have been given by the Tigers. I will give 100 per cent and hopefully gain an NRL contract. I can't explain how excited I am," Sevanaia said.
The Fiji Bati regular, who is the cousin of Fiji 7s rugby squad member Neumi Nanuku, received the call from the Tigers after starring for the Bati in the recent international against Tonga, impressing many with his stellar performance.
His agent, Phil Browne said Sevanaia showed the Tongan team, which featured numerous NRL stars, that he could match it with the best.
"The West Tigers got hold of this news and offered Sevanaia and Tomujani Koroi trials with the NRL club," Browne said.
"It was an amazing year for Seva in 2007.
"He just recently signed a three-year sponsorship deal with leading compression garment manufacturers, Skins.
"Not long after, the West Tigers offered a trial.
"I think 2008 will be an even better year for Seva, especially with the Rugby League World Cup in October."
Fiji National Rugby League chairman Peni Musunamasi said Sevanaia left the country on Saturday after playing against the Fiji 7s team on Friday.
Musunamasi said Sevanaia was a dedicated player who had risen to the top level since joining the sport in late 2005.
"He was a rugby union player and represented Ra.
He only joined league about two years ago," Musunamasi said.
"He is a very dedicated player and shows a lot of sacrifice. He was selected into the Fiji Bati side in 2006 and played in the World Cup qualifiers."
If successful in signing a contract with the Tigers, Sevanaia will gain automatic qualification into the Fiji Bati side for the World Cup.
Other NRLplayers who will play for the Bati are Wes Naiqama, Ashton Sims, John Sutton, Akuila Wati and Daryl Millard. Fiji is grouped with France and Scotland in Pool B.
The Bati face France on November 1 at the WIN Stadium in Wollongong.
Its second pool match against Scotland will be played at the Bluetongue Stadium in the Central Coast on November 5.

Hmm interesting I wonder do they mean Akulia Uate or if Wati is the correct spelling.

St George Illawarra has announced the arrangements for contracted players over the age of 20 not selected to play in the NRL each week.

All players will participate in the Illawarra Carlton League. Players will be allocated to their junior clubs eg Collegians, Wests, Thirroul, Corrimal, Dapto, Berkeley etc and all players that are not Illawarra juniors will be allocated to the Helensburgh club.

Draw has changed a little since then Girvs.

Wests v Balmain (round 13) will be brought forward to June 8 (free weekend) at Pratten Park. Balmain wanted a game for the Wests Tigers v Warriors at Leichhardt before they would agree to the move and have apparently organised some switches to make it happen, but I can't tell you what they are.

i dont know how strong the illawarra comp is but is it up to a standard where players can jump from bush football straight to the nrl i mean maybe they should have given illawarra a vb staet cup license so st george players who missed out on nrl selection and are over 20 could play against players of the same level

NSWRL to launch VB NSW Cup

Monday, 10th March 2008

The VB NSW Cup kicks-off this Saturday with an added dose of star power when Wentworthville take to the field with the likely inclusion of Parramatta Eels pivot Tim Smith.

The NSW Rugby League’s newest competition, being launched tomorrow at the NSW Leagues Club, is likely to be bolstered by other big name players throughout the year thanks to its open-aged status.

The NSW Rugby League is set to launch its other major competition tomorrow in the Jim Beam Cup, which this year incorporates the exciting inclusion of the Western Australia Reds.

NSWRL General Manager Geoff Carr said the League’s restructured competitions would provide fans with top-tier rugby league at a variety of suburban venues throughout the year.

“The VB NSW Cup is a new competition featuring five new teams and its fixtures are separate from the NRL – which ultimately means more football for the fans,” Carr said.

The sixth season of the Jim Beam Cup sees the inclusion of the WA Reds, who will play out of Members Equity Stadium in Perth, bolster an already thriving semi-professional competition.

“It’s the first time since 1997 a Perth team has competed in a top-tier competition,” Carr said.

“The Reds’ inclusion in the Jim Beam Cup is a terrific achievement in itself and I’m sure they will be looking for a big season to mark their return at this level.”

The Reds join the Southern Sydney Sharks and Campbelltown Eagles as the Jim Beam Cup’s three new teams for 2008.

NSWRL Season Launch

Tuesday, 11th March 2008

The NSW Rugby League today launched its two major competitions for Rugby League’s Centenary year which will both be covered in a new television show on Fox Sports.

From May this season Fox Sports will broadcast a NSWRL program which features a match of the day and comprehensive highlights, statitistcs and previews from the VB NSW Cup and Jim Beam Cup.

NSWRL General Manager Geoff Carr said the program, which will air each Wednesday at 5pm, would showcase the strengthening standard of the NSWRL’s two major competitions.

“It’s certainly exciting for us and it could not have come at a better time considering we have a number of new teams entering both competitions this year,” Carr said.

“It’s also very exciting for the teams that are participating because it will obviously give some assistance to them in attracting sponsors.”

The VB NSW Cup is set to showcase top-tier Rugby League to suburban venues throughout the year, with several NRL clubs set to use the competition as a vehicle to play their top-25 squad players who are over the age of 20.

Newtown Jets coach Greg Matterson said the VB NSW Cup’s schedule – which runs separately to the NRL – would benefit his players’ first-grade aspirations as NRL coaches would now have more time to view their performances.

“At the moment the Roosters’ first five or six games are on Friday night and we are on Saturday, so supporters can go and watch both games,” Matterson said.

“And the coaching staff can relax and watch either game – so I can watch first grade or Brad Fittler can come and watch the NSW Cup. They can actually take the time to watch (VB NSW Cup) players instead of being busy preparing the first-grade side.”

Matterson said the VB NSW Cup would also give fans a chance to see first-grade stars in action on a weekly basis, starting from Round One this weekend.

“This week I’ve got (Roosters first-graders) Sam Perrett and Mitch Aubusson coming back to VB NSW Cup – one’s an international and one is a first-grader,” Matterson said.

“I talked to them both last night and their heads are right around getting stuck into the VB NSW Cup. All the players know they need to be playing consistent football at this level to make it in first-grade.”

The Jim Beam Cup, which this year welcomes new teams the Western Australian Reds, Southern Sydney Sharks and Campbelltown Eagles, will again feature its successful salary-cap and points-based structure.

A Jim Beam Cup representative side will contest the annual Quad Series tournament, which will also feature the NSW Country side, the QLD Rangers and for the first time, the Great Britain Community Lions.

Southern Sydney Sharks’ Ian Baddock said the Jim Beam Cup’s progressive nature and salary-cap encouraged clubs to focus on developing their junior talent.

“I think that in Jim Beam Cup, it’s at an age where the players are just hungry to go forward,” Baddock said.

“I think it is the ideal grade for players which might not be right up to first-grade standard but aren’t too far away either, and that need to build their games.

“It’s very, very exciting for us to be involved in the competition and we’re looking forward to a great season.”
