Just saw the announcement of the teams for game 3 and Luai named in the 19. No Luke Keary so I assume he must be carrying an injury. It will be interesting if Cody or Nathan go down with an injury prior to SOO 3 we could see Luai making a debut. What odds would you have got for such an outcome prior to the start of 2020.

He might have a slight chance of making it into the team even if there are no injuries, as a bench utility. According to nrl.com, Fittler is considering adding a utility to the bench in place of a forward. Would be awesome to see him and Nathan carving up QLD together!

https://www.nrl.com/news/2020/11/13/utility-value-blues-keep-options-open-for-origin-iii-squad/

Ryan Papenhuyzen, Cameron McInnes or Jarome Luai could make their Origin debut as a bench utility in Wednesday's decider at Suncorp Stadium after being named in the NSW reserves behind an unchanged 17.

Blues coach Brad Fittler has hinted several times since the 34-10 game two win that not carrying a utility was a risk the team probably couldn't afford again, and having now included three of them in the 21, he will give himself and the coaching staff until Tuesday to decide if one will force their way into the 17.

The four benchies named all played well in game 2. Unless someone's got an injury I'll be very surprised to see any of these blokes make the side.

McInnes is the closest thing to a utility they have, although not sure about him covering a backline position, and he's predominantly a dummy half. In the absence of injuries you want your utility to be able to play 15 minutes or so in the backrow or its hard to get him into the game. But who would you drop for him?

Awful move from Freddy. That bench worked

Papenhuyzen was beast off the bench. The bench worked but this QLD side is different. Munster back. Grant on the bench and with no Murray going to lack the mobilty and punch to combat that.

People like to bag Ivan for his bench usage but Brown got 17 mins. Finucane 21. Paulo the same. So it isn't that much of an extra load for the rest of the bench to take on

Excellent player but weakens the side. Just drop Gutho for him

Papensonic is one of the fastest in the comp being just behind JAC. There's huge upside to having him play in the middle against tired defence.

I’m probably a dinosaur but i like us with four forwards of the bench, one like May or Capewell who can play in the backs if required. Kenny too was really good in his limited appearances this season, he is not just a dummy half. At the end of the day it appears we are some way off finalising our squad for next season given all the uncertainty.

With the new rules I'd never have a back on the bench in the NRL. In origin its insanity.

I tend to agree. Just have a bench player who can fill half a dozen roles if required, doesn’t have to be a specialist back who can only be used in the backs. I think the May/Naden situation tried in our two most important games of 2020 didnt work out that great for us.

The game has changed. We go down that route we will get left behind

Parra have their squad completed. 4 specialist props in the 30 most squads are looking the same

The problem with the game 2 bench is that in case of injury/HIA it's very difficult to cover the backline, and the 9 as well. The plan I believe was to put Yeo in the outside backs, you only have to think back to magic round last year against a side that missed the 8 to know how that might go.

Storm fans have suggested Papenhuyzen as a utility who can play forwards if needed, but the thing is if no-one goes down, he WILL be needed to do 15 minutes as an edge backrower or else he'll get splinters in his bum. He's quick and all but doesn't look like a backrower to me.

Looks like it'll be the same 17 as game 2 so any utility will be coming from Yeo and on field players like Wighton.
