NSW State Of Origin Team Game 1 2009

It's an interesting problem and not one the selectors will solve.

Anasta and Pearce showed tonight that you have to select a threatening halves combo. They were relying on QLD making mistakes off the high ball rather than using their firepower out wide.

For my money the standout half right now is Todd Carney. The standout 5/8 is Jamie Soward. Of course I'm only talking about NSW players here because there are a ton of QLD players who put them both in the shade.
At hooker Robbie Farrah is the obvious choice and at fullback Brett Stewart is a certainty. That's my 1, 6, 7 and 9.

Front rowers would be Mason, Bailey and Brent Kite off the bench.
Second row would be Andrew Ryan, Anthony Laffranchi and Steve Simpson off the bench.
Wingers would be a problem with only Hayne being a standout. Maybe Purtell or the new Carney kid from the raiders could step up.
Centers could still be filled by Gasnier and Cooper.
The bench would be filled out with a mobile foward like Ben Creagh and a utility back such as Gidley, Hornby or maybe Feleti Mateo.

if you are picking on current form and not names... how can you not have Pomeroy in the centres?

Honestly...

Gasnier and Cooper are our best combo no matter what IMO.

Gasnier if leading up to origin is 100% and in decent form will be good. Unlike game 2 this year where he was thrown in undone and got shown up, although 3 weeks before that he was most peoples MOTM in game 1.

Cooper has been really good all series, probably player of the series when it comes to consistency.

A) Has hands like feet
B) He is over-rated

And for EVERYONE selecting Mateo...FFS he isn't eligible...how many times does it need to be said...

Going on the basis that the Roosters retain Fitzgibbon.

Agreed, Mason as captain.

are you serious. thast pretty mcuh the same side as this year. you guys have to do what we did a few years ago when we kept losing, go for youth. People like Fitzgibbon, Hoffman, Bailey have been poor for years, there not just going to turn good next year

Never head about Mateo not being eligible.

If that's the case get Sutton in there.

I agree. Lets use no players from the best performed NSW side of the last three seasons. Excellent thinking Knights fan.

I believe that the team should be picked based on current club form, rather than reputation, like what has been the case over the last few years. Everyone should be made to earn their spot in the side, not just be an automatic walkup to the side.

I felt it was a very big mistake to go with Mitchell Pearce, especially in a deciding match. Matt Orford and Brett Kimmorley have been playing a lot better than he has been at NRL level.

He is also the form nsw centre atm

Watch him shut down people in D and run roit in attack. He is truely on fire atm. He may be in career form at the moment that won't carry to next year but at the moment he is on fire.

A side I'd be scared of ... time to clean out the cupboard

1. K Gidley
2. J Hayne - (marking Folau)
3. D Collis
4. M Gasnier
5. T Williams / C Lawrence
6. F Mateo
7. T Carney
8. <insert young prop that puts his hand up, must have workrate>
9. M Ennis / R Farrah (pick one and leave him there for 2 full years)
10. L Bailey
11. A Laffranchi
12. R Hoffman / B Creagh
13. G Bird

14. B Hornby
15. <insert young prop that puts his hand up, must have impact>
16. W Mason
17. C Heighington

Bird, Carney and Mateo together are strikepower ... if you want an organiser type, Wallace or Pearce with Carney at 5/8 is fine but you may look fragile in defence if choose to do so

that is a side to fear ... may not win in 09 ... but is a great investment for following years

anybody notable that is not listed, is same old same old and not going to win you any games any time soon

thats how it is ... deal with it

Oink !

I thought Mateo was eligable next year? And the only reason he wasn't this year had something to do with him playing for Tonga at the end of the year

You guys are forgetting Trent Barrett. He's played well in Origins before. I wonder if he'll make himself eligable?
