Thurston played game 2 last year with no fitness. Can’t see why Cleary can’t do it

Are you comparing Cleary to Thurston already? Night and day. We're already making him out to be the messiah. Ease up on the pressure guys. QLD will be bringing the heat on another young NSW debut half too. NSW didn't even go near a one-arm Thurston.

I don't see the rush, other than the assumption that Moses is on Fittler's list and there's a fear he'll actually be selected.

Yes Thurston did it. However Thurston had 30 or so Origin games under his belt, so he'd know what the step up in intensity is about. Cleary would be an Origin rookie so he would not know what the step up in pace and intensity is like.

The point is a bit moot though as he'll have had a second game under his belt before they pick the side.

People are making assumption about Moses because of Fittler giving him a wrap in a game call a couple of weeks ago .I don't think Freddy is wedded to the idea of picking Moses, and frankly on form, you wouldn't pick him for Origin 1.

Definitely. You'd pick a Johns from a losing Newcastle side, but you seriously wouldn't consider any young debutant half who is struggling to get his team up, IMO.

Let's see how Cleary goes next week, particularly with form edge forwards bearing down on him throughout the match - which sides Cleary & Maloney respectively defend for Penrith? I'd say SGI will give PEN more of game than WT did.

Interestingly, those edge forwards looking to crush them next weekend could be the same ones inside and protecting them in their following match!

Maloney usually defends on the left and Cleary on the right.

FOUR State of Origin rookies are locked in a sprint race to a debut NSW Blues jersey.

Brad Fittler’s top adviser Greg Alexander has confirmed to foxsports.com.au the leading candidates for a spot in the halves are Nathan Cleary, Luke Keary, Mitchell Moses, and Luke Brooks.

All four men are under 27 years of age, and none of them have stepped foot on the Origin or Test stage before.

The other man in contention is veteran playmaker James Maloney, who already has nine Origin caps to his name and is the incumbent. Maloney was considered a lock for a starting spot in the halves before Alexander revealed this week selectors are worried about his defensive form. A solid outing for Penrith on Thursday night will pour water on those fears somewhat.

But even if Maloney gets picked, NSW will enter Origin I with at least one half who has never experienced the game. “It will be (one of those four),” Alexander said.

Alexander also revealed veteran five-eighth Blake Green isn’t being considered for NSW selection.

Green has never played Origin, but is an experienced head and has been in fine form for the Warriors, on the back of a stellar 2017 season with Manly.

He was being spoken about as recently as a couple of weeks ago, but will not be taking part in Origin I. “Blake’s going well, but we really haven’t spoken that much about Blake,” Alexander said.

Alexander would not spill the beans on which of the four rookies is leading the race as of now.

Cleary is running with the handicap of having played just one game of football in the past two months.

He made his return from a knee injury on Thursday night, and looked as solid as ever as the Panthers beat Brooks’ Wests Tigers. Alexander was pleased with the performance of Cleary, but conceded two games may not be enough to earn him a NSW jumper.

“It was just good to see Nathan get back on the field,” Alexander said.

“Considering it was his first big injury, his first big knee injury, he looked confident and I thought it was a very confident return from him.

“That was the first thing, Nathan needed to get back on the field and feel confident on that leg. He looked good.

“But he hasn’t played Origin before ... he gets another game before the side is selected, but it’s a big ask to throw him into Origin.

“He didn’t goal kick last night, and I don’t know if we’ll need him to goal kick ... but there’s still a couple of things I’m sure he would love to do before he felt he was at the top of his game. “Match fitness might take him a while. Origin games are 20 per cent quicker than what an NRL game is.

“The first thing was he got back on the field and did exactly what I thought he would do, and that was play well.”

Alexander also seemed pleased with the performance of Brooks, despite the fact he played in a losing team whose attack failed to fire.

Moses will line up for the Eels on Friday night, then Keary steps out for the Roosters immediately after.

All four men will have round 12 as their final audition for a Blues debut.

Brandy and Freddy are two of my all time favourites - but WTF on even considering Moses at this point... too many head knocks?

He was flawless to me, all coming back from a bit of a holiday.

Another above average performance next week against quality opposition and you’d be mad to not pick him for game 1
No, I don't care about SOO this year as much as I am about his development. He's obviously underdone and at his absolute best and when blooding in a new playmaker, especially that young, anything other then him being 100% is not worth the risk.

He’ll be fckin fine stop carrying on like his mum

It’s not like he’s been sitting on his ass for 8 weeks eating potato chips losing every inch of his fitness

Another 80 min game and he’ll be perfectly fine.

He must be blooded this series, and if we waited until game 2 the pressure would be much more.

Each to their own, I'd prefer he skip this game.

Physically yeah but that's where it stops. Thurston is a great of the game with how many Origin matches under his belt, Cleary is a rookie.

The disscussion was about Cleary’s fitness. Obviously JT has a lot of ground on Cleary in every way as a half but coming back from an injury is the one area a young bloke has the advantage. He recovers quicker and he'll gain match fitness quicker as well.

The point was that even if he had a shit SOO game, it wasn't going to effect JT's developement since he was at the end of his career.
