I think we're expecting too much too quickly with Glen.... in a sense we almost made the same mistake with Kevin Locke in that for a good year and a half or so he was doing nothing on the wing for the Warriors. There is no doubt he is an unbelievable athlete. He's not getting consistent, regular NRL time. That can't be easy. Its a shame (but worked out well with Kevin last year) that he got injured when he did, because the game before he had torn up the Sharks and that match he was already showing signs of doing the same to the Roosters.
I think it will take him a year or two, same as I assume it would with Omar Slaimankhel. I don't think either are just the types of players that slot into first grade as the finished product. Both have enormous upsides. I don't think they're the sort of players you discard. There's not many players with the ability to score 10 tries in 3 weeks or whatever it was in any grade of football.
As far as the Vatuvei comment goes... while there's always the view to multi-skill players, some players are fullbacks and fullbacks alone, some are wingers and wingers alone. Locke for example is a mile better fullback.
I personally hope Glen tears the Cowboy's a new one tomorrow, and he gets that confidence to unleash on the NRL. We need players with his amount of X-factor coming through into our squad.
I hope he makes a real go of the wing position as well, because he's a park footy fullback at best. Sure he scores a lot of tries for the Vulcans
but his defensive efforts are just as pathetic for them as they were for the Warriors... as you just said, some players are wingers and wingers
alone, it's not their fault, they just dont have what it takes.
Locke is a better fullback than Fish because he's a far more talented footballer, the only reason wing doesn't suit him is because of his size.
The good wingers in the comp cover wing all the time when injuries occur, Vatuvei has never had anywhere near the skills required to do
so...watching Maloney having to cover fullback, especially as he'd never played there before, because our wingers are so lacking in skill
was one of the funnier things iv'e seen in quite awhile.
