Old 1970's scrum Rules

And kick (and on a bigger field, 13 a side, no dummy half special rules, can knock back...)

So more essentially, rugby league, without scrums. (Which add nothing to the game, and never have).
Sounds great. The less variety in the game the better. People are crying out for the game to become more predictable.

Well if we want unpredictable after errors, we should do line outs. At least they are interesting to watch.

Or we could flip a coin, really unpredictable, and still more interesting than a scrum to watch.

I would rather teams create unpredictability in their attack, rather than in retaining possession.

Some of the greatest blights on the game in terms of random rewarding for no skill, or random refereeing, such as losing the ball in a tackle, strips, and play the ball infringements, are terrible examples of unpredictable possession.

With scrums as they are now, I agree they’re useless.

Proper scrums with hookers having to compete, striking at the play the ball, stripping no matter the number of tacklers, playing the ball forward added richness to the game that’s sadly lacking nowadays.

Unpredictability in possession would make the whole game about stealing possession. Teams would go even more in to their shells in attack

If you want unpredictability, spread the ball from a scrum. Like it’s set up to do...
More likely to happen if the scrum is a genuine contest for the ball which would make it difficult for a team to leave their forwards out in the backline.

Or they could throw it around more knowing that even if they lost possession or made an error, they have an opportunity to get the ball back.

Yes, perhaps the scrum can be fixed up, but it’s still 7 on 7 for 1 tackle, spread the f**ken thing or throw a block move in at least, one out hit up is stupid

Maybe.

I think the most conservative teams tend to win at the moment, and can't see their mind set changing just if the rules did.

I think the conservative, good defensive sides, would ruck it up safely and rely on winning possession off the opponent's scrum/play the balls, just as they now do and sweat on errors/penalties.

Possibly. It would depend on the mindset of the team/coach.

Even if they were fairer, they are still dreadful to watch, and are really just an excuse for players to rest for a minute.

I don't like Union (partly because of scrums! and rucks and mauls where you can not tell what is happening at all) but for a contest of possession I really would prefer line outs.

When we had striking at the ball it had minimal effect on the game, same with stripping. But in the modern wrestling, professional era, I fear those rules would be the major focus of some team's efforts and that could be horrid to watch.
