That's not the point he's making. The AFL's continual sweeping of issues under the rug, its self-propelled arrogance and the compliant AFL media all combined to breed a culture where anything goes. Slowly, slowly the air is being let out of these jumped-up pricks.

To be honest though, it's a remarkable piece of work to develop an operation that not only hid things from the media but had them complying with the style of reporting and attitudes relating to it.

What a weak media culture to allow themselves to get the tone dictated.

The ABC would be well served to remove those from its ranks with such blatant self interest and bias on display.

Just saw on fox sports the head of the afl players association repeatedly stating the players did nothing wrong and that he will be speaking to the AFL about them ditching the wada code as it isn't compatible with Australian sport

He then went onto pin it all on Essendon

The players are educated to about the wada code

How is it Olympians get it but footy players and Shane Warne don't ?

Well let's be honest butch....

They really could ditch the WADA code of conduct.

It's not like they will be going to another league somewhere else, is it?

It leaves them wide open for allegations of anything goes

Also they lose funding from any government agency if the don't follow the wada code

Looks like Jobe is going to lose his Brownlow

Can I just say dave smith has come out of this looking like a champion and by extension our game has too

I didn't realise this was the case. They couldn't afford to do without that!

Also, agree re: Dave Smith.

Can remember Gallen being a sook to Dave Smith and the NRL at the time of his punishment.

Think in hindsight he should be very thankful.....

Dave Smith's legacy to the NRL growing.

The way some are going on about how unfair it is, never again can portions of the Australian public point the finger at Eastern European or Chinese athletes and have a tanty. Hollow rhetoric now.

do world football clubs, basketball clubs, cricket etc follow some kind of DA regulation? why should afl be exempt?

Of course they shouldn't, but inside the AFL bubble the administration, clubs and fans genuinely think they have the most special, perfect competition in the world despite the mountains of evidence to the contrary. It's indistinguishable from a cult environment.

The AFL is prepared to pay suspended drug cheats most if not all their wage in an attempt to ward off further legal action.

They're also prepared to directly fund the breaking of the WADA code:

Salary cap: Essendon will receive an allowance for payments to supplementary players over the capped limit

Gillon McLachlan:

"Existing contract values for the listed players [that] have been suspended shall [be] included in the TPP.

"Extra payments to supplementary players will be included in the club's salary cap but Essendon will receive an allowance for payments to supplementary players over the capped limit.

"In summary, it is the AFL's view that Essendon must be able to field a competitive team, to provide a safe working environment for both their own players and opposition players and these rules around replacement players are necessary for the club to be able to field a side around these doping bans."
