...hard to watch sometimes though when a player makes a play like diving on a loose ball which you see 15 times during a regular round of NRL and Phil Gould loses the plot for 5 minutes going on about it being an 'origin' play.

I agree, this is annoying.

It was Gus who was calling Glenn Stewart's fluke chip and chase in last years GF one of the all time great plays. I don't bother taking anything he says seriously.

To answer your question op it is becaus being the natural born leeches that kiwis are, they want the best of everything.

Origin is the pinnicale of rugby league so they want to latche onto a team, and claim it as their own.

Just like all the jobs they take in Australia and the welfare they recieve, their own nation is a piece of sh%t that offers them very little so they come to to suck the life out of this prospering country for whatever they can while still calling good on NZ home.

They are worse than the Mexicans on the American border.

Origin is like Gould, all about hype and hyperboles.

But go the mighty blues!!!!! QLD sucks! There might even be some biff in there this year just beause people expect it and it obligatory to have some so the players feel like they have to, not because they want to:lol:

As MKEB said, pre 1988 we only had Origin on NZ telly...I chose Queensland because they were the underdogs and because it was sunny there

I have now lived in Queensland for 6 years.

But why do people have to choose a team to support out of two Australian representive state sides? Especially when you probably dislike a majorty of the players anyway. I know I do.

Dad liked NSW, I went for Queensland. Easy. I love Origin and enjoy it even more getting into it by supporting a team, and having mates who do the same for either side. Plus I've never been to Sydney so it makes sense.

At least Gus can tell the difference between a chip and chase and a grubber ...

Anyhow, back to the original post, not really a lot different to somebody from Christchurch being a staunch supporter of the Warriors really is it, or any other team for that matter

Warriors or any other NRL team are clubs, not rep sides!

I thought most Kiwis backed the underdog? Particularly the rural/country town underdog?, and that was very much Qld when Origin was shown live on TVNZ in the late '80s.

Then Graham Lowe coached the Maroons, made him an honorary Qld'er when he won the dramatic 1991 series (and look at the match-ups - NSW had the superstars, Qld the battlers) and it became the done thing to support them.

I personally peaked supporting the Maroons in 2001 (when Alfie flew back for the game 3 decider) and NSW were a very unattractive football team (don't read any sexual innuendo into that last setence).

It was only two years ago I was pumping my fist for the Maroons but last year something happened. I switched, fed up with the five year winning streak. I can't stand Qld as a state and will never live there again, and their players aren't very appealing now are they? Who could get excited over Cam Smith, Thaiday, Thurston, and the traitor Inglis, et al? Who could get excited over Qld'ers per se?

QLD since 95 the year no superleague players were picked. they had a shocking team of no names so i went for the underdog. I've stayed that way ever since although i dont get excited like i once did especially now theyre trying to steal all our players.
