OT: ASADA and Drugs in NRL

Can you explain was possibly might be totally good about it?

Suity

Yes. The idea was to encourage players to self-report and potentially get medical help in cases of potential excessive use. i.e. before they became Ben Cousins or worse. That was what might possibly have been good about it. But it wasn't too hard to predict that the players would have other ideas....

Did they have no foresight into what might happen if you give young male footy stars who love to party an 'out' into using recreational drugs?

Or that the clubs would use it to under report and therefore smother detection and allow usage to flourish and problems to develop

I still don't get why what the AFL do bothers you. If you're right and it is fundamentally an inferior product, people won't watch it. Despite the fact that lots of people enjoy watching it (and may be pains in the arse while talking about it), it still doesn't stop you and I watching something different.

The idea behind the 3-strikes thing isn't totally bad...it just doesn't seem to be workable, and (predictably) has been cynically exploited.
I said earlier why I was enjoying what's happened today. It was the crap Smith and the NRL copped over the handling of the saga while we were told the AFL handled it all brilliantly and their players were innocent. It was also the fact the AFL tried to do a dodgy deal with the goverement while the NRL was left out to dry. It's called Karma.

And the idea for the 3 strike policy isn't totally bad?? It's just not workable  bit of a contradiction Baz. Doing the wrong thing but you just self report and there are no consequences seems a fantastic idea ??? No wonder the players got needled up and thought that nothing would happen to them I mean you can go out on a bender each week and just let someone know and all is sweet.

If administered properly it could potentially allow for rehabilitation.

If people have serious problems it is always better to help them rather than arsehole them.

I repeat though. If administered properly.

Just like Gary's heroin consumption

If, massive if mate. Instead of doing what was right for the player it was all about protecting the brand and image of the AFL. Same as the players with the doping saga, who knows what they were given and what side affects they will have throughout the rest of their lives??? But it was still all about the brand and not what was best for the players.

Exactly.

It was ignorance of the current mindset of the younger generation. It was also a way of reducing the poor publicity for the game.
God knows how many young players have gone down this path, and it's all been hidden by the governing body of the sport.
Can't have "Australia's Game" portrayed poorly in the media, can we?
They do everything they can to protect the "Image" of the sport.
It's really sad. The culture from the top is appalling.

I really cannot believe that was ever a policy. Absolutely astounding that they would protect their employees from taking illegal drugs. Twice.

Suity

It was all about protecting their brand, that way there was no negative press.

If it were a league player its all over the media because our media are sandal mongers and dont care about League.

Huge difference in culture and how the 2 games are/were administered. That may change now Vlad has jumped ship. Vlad is also a big Essendon fan, he'll be slitting his wrists today.

Yep it's all about the games image and brand, and Baz and Gaz wonder why some of us are sticking the boot in. Especially after all the crap Smith and the NRL copped.

Speaking for myself only, maybe it's because the behaviour of the AFL has nothing to do with my enjoyment of rugby league, or life in general. And it buggers why you chaps let them bother you so much....but to each their own I guess. And I've never been a critic of Dave Smith either, I thought he was a great pick for the job and carried out his duties pretty well.

That just about sums it up.
It's truly a Victorian/Southern State/ AFL thing, despite the questioning of some.
They are entitled to their opinion though.

Disclaimer: This excludes Phantom Bart as he will quote this. So f**king boring.

is the NRL or RL my uncle as well??? I mention them just as much, just saying how much rubbish was written at the time. And as usual most of the media got it wrong.

Suity sums up My thoughts in his reply to Twizz. It might not bother you but I'm just sick of the raw deal RL gets in the media. Constantly dragged through the mud for the most minor of indiscretions while AFL and it's players seem to do as they please. Thinks are starting to change I think people are starting to wake up to this holier then though organisation.
