Desperate to avoid the toxic fallout from the resignation of his friend and mentor Brian Houston from Hillsong, Scott Morrison has told an astonishing lie today, claiming he hasn’t been to Hillsong for “15 years” when pressed on the scandal by journalists.

“I haven’t been at Hillsong now for over, about 15 years, I go to a local church,” Morrison said this morning, professing himself “disappointed and shocked to hear the news”.

But his efforts to dissociate himself from Hillsong are profoundly at odds with his enthusiastic support for Houston and Hillsong in recent years, as Crikey’s David Hardaker has documented.

Morrison’s most recent and high-profile visit to Hillsong was in July 2019 when the prime minister — triumphant from his surprise election win — and his wife joined tens of thousands of Hillsong worshippers onstage for the corporation’s annual conference (an event Morrison regularly attends) to discuss his faith and religious freedom. Morrison “prayed for Australia” at the conference.

Morrison was interviewed on stage — interrupted by wild cheering and applause from Hillsong devotees — by none other than Brian Houston himself.

Indeed, that conference attended by Morrison — held at Homebush in Sydney — was the occasion when Houston (affected, he claims, by alcohol and anti-anxiety medication) entered the hotel room of a woman and didn’t leave for 40 minutes.

Morrison has a history of lying when under political pressure, with many of his scores of documented lies coming in moments of stress — for example: lying that he’d told Anthony Albanese he was going to Hawaii, lying about his claim that the vaccine rollout “wasn’t a race”, and lying about harassment claims within Sky News when under pressure in relation to workplace issues in Parliament House.

The disgrace of his friend and mentor Brian Houston, a relationship both Morrison and Hillsong were once happy to promote, is another moment of political pressure that has once again prompted a prime ministerial lie — the most blatant one of all.
How does this lying prick remain PM - only 8 weeks to go!

Oh yeah im sure theres more to the story.

But its not just murdoch. Nine/fairfax were running with it big time.

No surprises it got no mention here tho

Nine/Fairfax is Costello at the helm, so again they'll take the LNP line.

I said from day dot ScoMo was a peanut. Injad a few close friends who praised the guy.
Can't wait for him to go. Abbot was the guy we needed to keep in long term.

...and no surprises that the ALP are being dirty disingenous f**kbags by shit bagging the other side for having a 'toxic' culture and then ignoring any of their own issues. Albo was poor on this when asked.
Timing mate. They were good friends.

I love how court filings in the USA read like a screenplay, with colour and anecdotal barbs.

Anywho, Trump is suing everyone because the alleged false (?) linking of him to Russia. Trump court cases are usually about the publicity rather than having an intent to ever see a courtroom, however you never know.

Just like “I’m going to build a wall”, expect to hear “I’m suing them for billions”. Even if he loses it will be valuable us vs them material.

That’s weak evidence, but let’s move on.

You’ve already given him immunity and framed the argument in a way that if I challenge it I’ll be labelled an uncaring merkin because someone died.

@strider was right. You only share one side of the debate but I guess you’ve been clear about where you stand.

In any case, even if it was shared I would have said that Albo’s lack of leadership on the bullying issue isn’t comparable to some of SmugMo’s worst efforts.

I would have thought our politicians should be busy in their formal roles instead of overcome and beset by knifing.

They sit there and dream up ways to harm each other in their own party politically, when they should be focusing on policy and kissing babies.

Scomo was trying to invite that don’t pastor to the Whitehouse. He doesn’t have the clean hands.

The news cycle is also stupid.

I do, @strider made a good point. Due is due.

The late senator ( and we all agree her death is tragic) was playing games. Some argue she was used up by others. According to the mean girls, she had to be punished.

That smh article was very interesting.

Politics is a nasty business and there are preselection tussles all the time. Veteran LNP merkin Kevin Andrews lost his gig and that was even more controversial. Once again, I don't get why everyone is taking the bait that the stress of factions lead to her demise. That's just wild unsubstantiated electioneering.

Yes, I’d prefer a medical opinion over the journos and the disgruntled, but I’m not sure if they can attribute the heart attack to factions.

Anecdotally, I don’t think Politics is a very healthy occupation, but who can say that she wouldn’t have passed away so early in any other jobs?

Shorten has knifed more flesh than a butcher and walks around like a porcupine, but he’s going strong.
