It’s on. Twitter this morning is full of LOL the “woke merkins have been analed” comments. Well I don’t think it’s going to pan out that way in a two way street scenario.

Trump famously said

“I’M GOING TO OPEN UP OUR LIBEL LAWS SO WHEN [THE NEW YORK TIMES AND THE WASHINGTON POST] WRITE PURPOSELY NEGATIVE AND HORRIBLE AND FALSE ARTICLES, WE CAN SUE THEM AND WIN LOTS OF MONEY.”​

Facebook, Twitter, etc are protected from libel lawsuits in the USA by the Communications Decency Act, which means that they are not considered to be publishers of content provided by their users. Translation: they can’t be sued for a defamatory comments posted by merkins on their sites.

So Elon, does racial, LGBTQ, religious etc vilification equal free speech? We’ll see.

Musk is seeking profits (he borrowed eleventy quadrillion to buy this toy), so I wonder what he thinks the best business model for twitter looks like ? A cesspool of misinformation, russian bots and open slather open source, zero moderation free-for-all ? Well we saw this business model circa 2019 before twitter decided to moderate what they called misinformation during the US election and pandemic.

It will be interesting to see what he (and his finance partners) assess what the opportunity cost of “free speech” looks like.

BTW twitter does not make a profit. So he bought a loss making company for $46b.
