Ugh. This is even from SkyNews.
“He’s a Fox News presenter so, we got to remember the Pentagon is one of the largest bureaucracies in the world and one of the most powerful militaries in the world, he doesn’t have a lot of experience, it must be said, in managing large government organisations.”
Prof. Dean said Hegseth appeared to be nominated on the basis of his political views, his support for president-elect Trump and his criticisms against “what he brands ‘woke culture’” within the Department of Defence.
“Loyalty to the president seems to be one of the key motivating factors,” he said.
“He spoke very clearly in the book that he believes woke culture has taken over the US Department of Defence. He makes reference to joining the military now is, in his view, no different to just going to Harvard and doing a gender studies degree.”
Prof. Dean said Hegseth had a “warrior approach” when it came to military reform, but questioned his experience and ability to run a large organisation such as the DoD.
“What is his views on China? What is his views on capability development within the Pentagon? What is his views on the asymmetric capability development? What is his views on the future role of U.S. Navy or the US Army?” he said.
“Those sorts of big strategic questions are very unknown. And of course, being a
junior infantry officer does not qualify you to work at the strategic level or bureaucratic level.”
