Ley declares her hand, Price defection backfires

Sussan Ley has officially declared her hand for the leadership of the Liberal Party as the move by rival Angus Taylor to poach Jacinta Nampijinpa Price from the Nationals pushes the Coalition close to civil war.

The leadership, to be decided at a party room meeting on Tuesday, officially became a two-horse race on Friday when former trade minister Dan Tehan withdrew.

Ley pledged to try and win back female voters who have deserted the Coalition over the past two elections.

“We did let the women of Australia down … we have to understand why they didn’t support us,” she said.

She also took a pop at Taylor, who has attracted widespread criticism for the paucity of economic policy over the past three years.

“The Liberal Party needs to listen to the Australian people and meet them where they are. We need to understand their aspirations. We need to build a new economic narrative,” she said.

“We need new policy offerings that show Australians we can help them and their families get ahead.”

Tehan has kept open the option of running for the deputy leadership.

“I will work hard and serve in whatever capacity I am asked to rebuild our party,” he said.

Tehan has been touted in some circles as Ley’s running mate, as Price is being touted as a running mate for Taylor in a bid to swing the populist conservative vote behind the former shadow treasurer.

But her recruitment appears to have backfired, with the Nationals livid at what they say was treachery by their Coalition partner in poaching Price – a move that will reduce the Nationals to fewer than five senators. This will cost the Nationals its status as a party in the Senate and the extra staff and resources that come with that.

“Loyalty matters a lot and only five days ago Jacinta was elected in the Northern Territory to sit in the Nationals party room,” Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie said.

“That is not the behaviour of a trusted partner”.

As a member of the Northern Territory’s Country Liberal Party, Price can choose whether to sit with the Liberals or the Nationals when in Canberra. But since 1980, the CLP Senate position has been aligned with the Nationals.

“I think the Liberal Party and the CLP have to make decisions around the impact of Jacinta’s decision to resign from the National Party,” McKenzie said.

Liberal moderates, who are swinging behind Ley, said the recruitment of Price, ostensibly for a leadership position, was political suicide, given that one reason Peter Dutton was hammered at Saturday’s election was a perception among voters he was too much like Donald Trump.

Price is a darling of the conservative movement that associates with Trump.

She created controversy during the campaign when she used the slogan “Make Australia Great Again”.

That her defection was in part brokered by Tony Abbott has further alarmed moderates. One said Taylor had, in one fell swoop, shown “he can’t unite the Coalition”.

He had also sent a sign to Liberal women that none of them were good enough for the deputy role, they said.

“We think this will go badly for him,” said one moderate MP.

In defending her decision, Price was coy about whether she would run for deputy.

“I’m being very considerate with the decisions I’m making, and [I’ve] spoken to a raft of people in the lead up to that decision that I’ve made,” she said.

She confirmed that she had spoken to Abbott. “He does support that move [to the Liberal Party]. He’s explained to me that he supports that move.”

Wow, that's a stunning act of bastardry by (dumb merkin) Jacinta Price, against the people who have to date supported her into the Senate position she holds.

Civil war within the coalition.
Albanese didn't just win another term for Labor, he won two terms and maybe three.
This is beautiful to watch.

If Sussan is leader of the LNP, then she is the sacrificial lamb until the faceless faction men are ready to install their candidate for the 2029 election. Most probably Andrew Hastie.

Libs have no other option in light of the devastating Dutton defeat than to select the more moderate option for leader (which is Ley), to try and attempt to come back to the centre where they bled votes to Teals and Labor.

Taylor and Price would be more of the same as Dutton but worse - and there's nothing for the Libs to gain going down that route, as they already get the preferences from people that vote One Nation.

Picking a woman as opposition leader will also help the Libs seem less horrible right-wing and mean - and Ley has been their deputy, so it's like like they're just voting for a token random in leadership (like it would be if Jacinta Price gets a spot).

I don't think they've got anyone else to take over from Ley for the 2028 election... and Hastie is probably smart to sit out that hiding to nothing, as the Labor majority is now so strong that Albo's win is effectively a Labor government for the next two terms. So Hastie should let Ley take the next election fall, and be planning for his run as Lib leader for the 2031 election imo.

Lol, bring on the split! 😂

A Coalition split has been raised in the election aftermath, including by [LNP senator Matt] Canavan himself, as the Nationals’ influence in the joint party room grows proportionately. “The Nationals party has been able to hold seats,” he said. “The way the Liberal Party is being pulled and pushed in different directions, there’s an opportunity ... for the Nationals party to run in more seats. If that leads to us breaking up, great, fine.”

Also from the above article...

Former Liberal senator and moderate Simon Birmingham was more circumspect about its prospects. He urged an overhaul that reached every element – from its membership to the way it approaches culture wars.

“The broad church model of a party that successfully melds liberal and conservative thinking is clearly broken. The Liberal Party is not seen as remotely liberal and the brand of conservatism projected is clearly perceived as too harsh and out of touch,” he wrote on LinkedIn.

“The Liberal Party has failed to learn lessons from the past, and if it fails to do so in the face of this result, then its future viability to govern will be questioned.”

Birmingham's entirely correct there.

Can't believe it was only one week ago we saw the Liberal National Party Coalition's seats decimated, along with the Greens for good measure.

And thinking that over the past 38.5 years since the Eels last won a premiership - maybe I've had more joy following Labor in that time than from rugby league?

Lets see - Eels seasons where we've made the semi-finals since 1 Jan 1987... 14 from 38 (that's 39%). 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022.

Labor federal election wins since 1 Jan 1987... 7 from 14 (that's 50%). 1987, 1990, 1993, 2007, 2010, 2022, and now 2025.

So yes, Labor has it over the Eels on primary votes - 50% to 39%!

to be 100% always no emissions electricity then the options for the last 10% or so are
- pumped hydro - need to find suitable locations - pretty expensive
- batteries - may be limited if we get many days with low renewables - will help get to 90%
- green hydrogen - use electrolysis to generate hydrogen with excess renewables - burn it in gas turbines when renewables are low. Still not commercially proven
- nuclear
Burning hydrogen forms water vapour which is also another greenhouse gas,

Austerity and small government are not new concepts. But this is a level of government that is foreign to us Aussies.

They are no longer providing consumer checks for choking hazards or toxic materials on toys etc

I would be interested to hear from anyone who supports this type of government. Every man for himself, I guess.
