Foxtel's broadcast and commercial subscriber base sat at 2.268 million as of December 31 2019

https://www.afr.com/companies/media...-pressure-increases-on-foxtel-20200207-p53ylc

ABS state that the number of Australian households is approx 10 million. It stands to reason that 99% of those households would have free to air telly. And yes, the ABC also stream their sport.

So Foxtel's reach of 20%. Yet somehow a pay for view organisation should be the vehicle that promotes these sports.

Waiting for @Poupou Escobar to put his spin on it like it's a competitive game.

doesn't work that way

if its free to air people who don't normally watch women's sport will will channel surf and check it out for a bit and it may actually capture new markets that may eventually watch more of it

you wont get that if they have to pay, but I suspect there is a bit more to it, Foxtel has received $40 million since 2017 while ABC has been cut by $110 million.

Makes you wonder why a pay TV provider needs propping up when they have a monopoly
Isn't the point that they spend the money producing the women's sport TV product? I'm no mathematician, but $40 million is less than $110 million.

Sure, here you go: what percentage of Australians want to watch women's sport? Looks like less than 20% want to watch the men.

Hearing from a client that Stan Sport is a thing and the new home of Rugby.

Will be interesting now that Kayo will have a competitor.

You'd have to think the current agreement would prohibit them from including League, at least until the next TV rights deal comes up.

They are gonna want to secure a damn sight more than rugby union to drive a sports streaming service .... didnt foxtel commit for quite a long term to the NRL or what that just discussions?

Maybe Nine will try and cut back their free coverage?

Lets hope it doesnt end up like the plethora of streaming for entertainment where you need half a dozen services to watch what you want.

I'd say they will be using it as a test run for bigger things

When OptusSport starting streaming the English Premier League they got it horribly wrong and I think one of the problems was that they underestimated its popularity and they had constant server issues at the very start, all sorted now but I think starting with the ARU is a good way to start as the amount of subscribers wont be too high

Stan also lost the rights to new Showtime products and episodes (e.g. Billions) a few months back, so they were at the 'push or shove' stage. Interesting to see what get out clauses exist if they decide to give Stan the arse in 12 months time. Probably a sensible deal for RU though.

Ahh, the future of sports broadcasting in Australia.

Move all of the small sports over to streaming services and then do the same and charge a premium for the more in-demand content. We'll end up like the US where the only thing on FTA tv is reality rubbish and bad dramas.

You say that but is anti-siphoning going to stop being a thing? I've been watching footy on Foxtel all year then on grand final day I had to f**k around sorting out the channel nine app and login for my Telstra TV box because Fox weren't showing the game.
