So today was the day... 4 "players" no older than 17, 2 old guys, one fat guy and one guy who plays third grade syd comp.

But they did heavily promote a 6 week training thing, $10 for an hour a week, get a bag, afl ball plus all the other shit. Makes you wonder when we get shit all in our membership packs.

Had pssa try outs this arvo so tried to not send home the notes and after the bell rang at least 8 kids told me i didnt hand it out. Seems like they wanna go.

If the NRL was giving Parramatta 100 million smackaroonies we'd be able to give away heaps of shit as well.

Exactly Suity, the AFL are pissing up 100m in the next ten years for the GWS White Elephants alone. Add in another 100m for the Phuns and thats a lot of money for 2 area's that couldn't give a rats about AFL. Add in draft and salary cap concessions and they are pretty much trying to buy success. You'd be pissed if you followed a traditional Melbourne Flogball club who have barely 2 cents to rub together and who are fighting for survival...........

I find AFL as boring as f**k but I don't think anyone should treat the GWS too lightly in terms of a threat. I find it quite surprising how many people I know around the area that follow AFL as opposed to rugby league.

Having taught in a western sydney school I can tell you that the Ed Dept allow soccer, touch and afl as winter school sports in that area and don't allow league. When I enquired was told that the ethnic mix of the school would lead to outbreaks of violence if league was allowed, ie, get out of control.
Makeup was roughly equal proportions white/Middle Eastern (mostly muslim)and islander.
In short they were concerned that the islanders and middle easterners would give it to each other and settle grievances in schooltime or elsewhere. And the African kids liked soccer so it was heavily promoted.
The nrl needs to get off its backside and put dev officers into schools to help teachers to run these things.
Must say though that I played soccer on weekends (league/touch/murder ball while in school - during the 1970s) and still followed league. Playing soccer certainly didn't mean following an Aussie or English soccer club.
Fact is no sport matches the intensity and entertainment value of league.
It stands on its own merits as a game - certainly not because of it being pampered by the media or due to excellent administration.

That says more about the company you keep than the threat of AFL.

Smart decision.

I think if history has taught us anything, its that Racial tension and violence could never be associated with soccer games.

 ... but not ON the field

my theory with soccer hooliganism was always that the game was so boring the fans had to make their own entertainment

With Education dept logic like that it's no wonder teachers are called dubbos.
