I've never seen a poster on the LU boards ruin so many threads.

To the OP, I admire your optimism, but there is still a very wide gap between potential and reality. We have a long, hard road ahead of us before we get where we deserve as a game.
To the OP good topic, the NRL has a lot more positives then we are given credit for but whether we have the ability to take advantage of the positives is another matter. We're in better shape than we were 10 years ago though.

Rugby is no threat? they got 70,000 to a meaningless dead rubber Bledisloe cup match when NRL finals matches were on

Imagine when the Super 15 starts up and there are more local Aussie derbies, some fans of both codes will choose a Super 15 match over a NRL match.
Is that the same Super Rugby that gets outrated by the Toyota cup on Fox????

Haynetrain you hilarious fool.
Reds drew 22k, amazing compared to the Broncos 34k average, with a longer season. Also amazing compared to the Maroons constant sell-out crowds.

And Aussie derbies wow, I'm sure so many Rebels fans are going to travel up to Brisbane when they play the Reds...

Am I reading right? BrayneDrain has just compared an NRL club finals match to an international rugby fixture that takes place once a year?

I reckon by that logic we can unequivocally say that the AFL is better than my cousin's rugby league Grand Final because it draws up to 100k, while my cousin's GF has about 100 in attendance.

For the record, the comparative crowds for Super 15 would be ARL State of Origin, where the Waratahs and Reds never fill either the SFS or Suncorp, yet the SOO is always full at Suncorp and more than 3/4 full at ANZ. The comparative comp for the NRL is Sydney club rugby, which draws 1-2k at best per game.

NRL finals matches thus far

27,026
33,315
16,668
15,574
23,459
26,746

Reds vs Bulls

26,669

Reds vs Stormers

30,259

Reds vs Highlanders

26,700

The Queensland Reds can draw a bigger crowd in the regular season against foriegn teams then the NRL can draw in finals matches

:lol::lol::lol:

If you’re a Union fan in Brisbane you have about 6-7 games of decent quality (for Union) per year. Just because the team is from NZ or SA doesn’t matter because as far as you’e concerned you either see the Reds play or you see nothing. There is no alternative for you.

Forget Union or Aussie rules.

If you get the 2022 world cup then soccer will take over. The golden generation are getting old enough now to go back home and promote the game. Followed by the the buzz of a World cup.

Also if you think the NRL have money you will be in for a shock.

Your arguing over 20,000 crowds? Some teams get 70,000 every week for all games, in all weather. 50,000 crowds are common.

That is whats coming to Australia.
Thats what people are going to want a piece off.

If/when the NRL negotiates an $850 to $950 million TV deal, after club grants they will have a minimum of about $350-$450 million minimum to promote and develop the game. They've never had that much money before.

The NRL is moving into a pretty good era if it can get the right management structure in place. In five years there'll be 18 teams, 18-19k averages, large southern state viewers and grassroots participation on par with AFL and catching up to soccer.

As for Soccer, wasn't everybody going to convert after the last 2 world cups? Same with Union in 2003. People watch Badminton every 4 years too but it's local games that develops long term interest.

If soccer does finally develop a stable domestic league for a long enough time period, it will take a generation before it gets enough support - and even if it does, I suspect it will affect AFL more than Rugby League.

Soccer has no chance. Problem for soccer is that no matter what the circumtances are we are never going to have a competition stronger than the A League is now because the best Australian players are always going to earn a motza in Europe and Asia and we cannot compete with that. The A League will always be a second rate competition and hardcore soccer fans will still prefer to follow the EPL or other European competitions. It will improve if we have a successful World Cup bid. But overall long term soccer doesn't have the strength and history to be able to compete with Australian Rules and Rugby League in Australia.

Lol, the Toyota Cup rates higher than Super 15 rugby on tv.
Haynetrain, your a deadset dill. No matter how you put it, overall, league sh*ts on union in this country. Having more people at the game means little, an extra 50k at the stadium as opposed to a few hundred thousand more on tv!

At the moment, yeah i agree with you 100%.

However if you a rich business owner or a large media company for example. It would be a good place to invest as the potential returns are so much greater.

If a buzz can be created, you never know.

I'm sure people thought similar things about the Storm when they went to Melbourne.

Just thought i'd put it in there as this thread had turned into a Union vs League thread about crowds which is a bit boring. :)

whilst I agree the game seems to be heading generally in the right direction there are still some major challenges that need to be overcome in the next 20 years if we are to become all we can be:

1. Making the Nrl a truly national sport with RL a popular sport in all parts of the country
2. Translating TV audiences to game attendances
3. Getting what the game is worth from its TV and sponsorship deals and using that to pay players what they are worth so we don;t lose our talent to other codes/countries
4. Support the Pacific nations to make RL the number one code in the whole Australasian region
5. Getting the International game back to its profile of years gone by and making teh Kangaroos national household names
6. Getting a leadership/management team that can get our game to where it needs to go

Wanna ban me for telling facts? phucking idiot

Its not my fault those games were not even closed to being packed

Yes it is. You're turning supporters away from rugby league because no-one wants to be associated with following the same sport as you do.
