Our New Fullback

John Grant will be the fullback in 2012.. I hope so. I think he will prove to be one of our best signings.

I hope you are right too, I'm all for new blood.......but I really think we already have our NRL fullback in our ranks, Mitch Brown. He is no superstar & won't "win" us too many games, but he certainly won't "lose" us many either........I think he has had a raw deal in his time at WT's. He has always done the job, particularly at FB on the few occasions he has had a chance there. And I was one of his biggest critics when he first came to us, I saw him in a trial match against Manly at Bluetongue & thought he was useless, he has since changed my mind about him.

I can't agree. I'm a big Mitch Brown fan, but he has no x factor. I note that you don't think we need a "matchwinning" fullback, but I think fullback is way too crucial a position to just have someone there that "won't lose us any games".

I'm super excited about John Grant. From what i've seen he is another tall, gangly, awkward Patty Richards type.. He's supposed to be super quick and very strong. He scored another hat trick for Eastwood on the weekend. Yes I know it's only Rugby, but you can only dominate what's in front of you.

Each time I see a Wigan game I think Richards should still play NRL. We all know he is a great winger, but even his appearances at the back are class.

Grant hasn't dominated too much if he can't win a contract with one of four Australian rugby franchises....

If you do the maths, that would put him outside the top 20 or 30 outside winger/fullbacks in Australian rugby. Hardly promising.

Zero expectations on this guy. Will be stoked if he surprises me.

Maybe I'm just used to us having nuffy fullbacks????

There's 5 franchises (NSW, QLD, ACT, WA & Victoria) but completely agree. Can't believe people are batting themselves off over this guy and would be very surprised if he gets a run in firsts next year.

Wasn't tuiaki playing in the local manly rugby comp when we found him? He was like 24 then aswell.

Just because grant isn't signed to a super rugby franchise doesn't mean he isn't a good player. Obviously comparing him to a bloke who was named the worlds best winger is ridiculous but I wouldn't dismiss him just cause he isn't signed.

According to RLW, Brown is contracted to the Tigers for 2012, but isn't feeling wanted and already has 2 Sydney clubs chasing him. Apparently he didn't like being 'third' fiddle I guess behind Tuqiri, Utai and Ryan

Maybe he went to the wrong High school or doesn't own a tweed coat with elbow patches. My Son In law played first grade rugby union & notwithstanding whether he could play or not, he was never going anywhere in the code because he went to a public School.

He was playing league as a prop in the northern beaches comp.
Simmonds found him when he was the coach of Tonga from memory.

I reckon Grant will be an outstanding signing for us.

He has the basis in place in terms of busting tackles, stepping, a footy brain, enourmous reach, dazzling pace, and he's tall.

With some decent skills coaching, I really think he will be a star.
Let's wait and see. . . .

This John Grant love-in is absolutely ridiculous.

You guys are basing these comments on his youtube video! Fitzy could put a youtube video together of only the good things he ever did and it would look a million bucks.

Five rugby franchises in Australia. 30/35 fullbacks/wingers under contract. No John Grant. There's a reason he hasn't got a Super contract. He's not any f**king good.

Wrong, it's because he's 22. One or two more years in union and he would've been very unlucky not to grab a Super starting wing position.

I think he will surprise you guys next year...he could be your first-choice winger if he can learn the game. Outstanding finisher, and 195cm tall. I wouldn't be surprised to see him grab the fullback spot either, given your(apparent? Tedesco is too young and I'm not sure who else you have coming through) lack of options.

I'd love to place a wager on that one MU. He'll play first grade next year.

I made the effort & recorded the Shute Shield final & watched it briefly last night. Whilst it is only club rugby, on the very few occasions Grant got the ball he looked ok, certainly very quick & doesn't seem to mind the collision. He is a big boy but probably needs a good off season in the gym to build up his upper body. Interesting pick up for WT & I look forward to seeing him play league next year.
