^ great post.

I really wonder if Mt Smart is holding the Warriors' crowd numbers back. Both Eden park games have been extremely well attended. We really a dedicated league field in an accessible part of town.

Perhaps OG can buy the Carlaw park area, then demo those dumb buildings there and make a stadium like the one in Dunedin

Put a team in Wellington. Call it the Wellington Wasps. Put em in black n yellow horizontal striped jerseys. Have them run out to Wiz Khalifa's black n yellow every home game. Have wasp swarming sounds played in the stadium during pertinent moments in games.

i'd actually be down with a team called the Wellington Wasps or even Wellington Hornets goes well with the whole black & yellow beehive theme they got going on down there and when they score they can play Buzzin' from Schwayze.

Mt Smart as a location was picked because of where it is......and the demographic of the "supposed" NRL fan.....ie, Maori Pacifika....and I have to say, it works OK, but what the powers that be don't see is people like me...white european and bored with Union (WEABWU's :D ).......

If the Warriors played 1 game down here a year in Wellington, we'd fill the Tin........can't understand why teams like the Sharks and Roosters don't take their "home/away" games v the Warriors here....

22k for the England 4 nations game....then.....NOTHING ...wet windy weekends in Wainuiomata are all we get down here...and for a skinny white boy, it ain't much fun

From what I have read, the Caketin is pretty booked up. This may be why we don't get more games there?

It does seem utterly ridiculous though; every game there has had a good turnout, and this is the capital city of NZ. Surely the council would try and lure some NRL matches??

We'd definitely have a mean turnout for an annual Warriors game down here; do it near the start of the season so there's no chance of poor performances detracting from the crowd figure.

Get a "classic" team to play us here, like the Broncos, Dogs or Souths. That way we'd also get old school fans of these teams - there are heaps around.

For less-intense league fans, an early season Wellington game would also be a great way to capture their attention (and TV viewing) for the rest of the season.

I really hope Owen Glenn is going to push for something like this.

Yeah I'd be down with Wasps I reckon. Hornets is a bit USA for my liking. But it's all good too.
Golden yellow jersey with a black v or double v = epic.

It'd be cool to hear all the puns about "sting in the tackle" etc too. Probably potential for "defenders swarming in" as well.

TBH, anything but orcas. I hate sea mammals.
So "Sea Shepherd" and "Greenpeace" wouldn't be welcome as club sponsors then

Done some more digging around and the Cake Tin is used 49 times a year at the moment. The committee who oversee it's running is made up of various people from the local council, local businesses and a few sporting types. Apparently, they would be keen to host a warriors game at the Tin on a yearly basis as they were very impressed with the turn out at the Kiwis v England game in 2010.
WRFL needs to get on the blower to Mr Glenn and rather than ask for his money, ask for his advice. Fly him down here for the opening weekend of the WRFL senior comp on March 31st...let him see that the game has potential down here.

Once he's seen the potential...THEN ASK FOR HIS MONEY

This weekend being Paddy's weekend, I will be on the ale, but anyone in need of a fix of grass roots RL should get down to Cannons Creek Park in Porirua from 1.30 for a double heder of pre-season games...or to Wise Park in the Hutt from 1.30 for the other 4 teams warm up games. Both Saturday!

"Wellington Wetas" for me

Wasps has been used before and it sounds to americanized or netbally. In fact there a team in the UK The London Wasps and what's worse it's the other code that has this.

Wetas have a connection with NZ more than wasps does. Plus they are tough ugly no nonsense insects (Taste really bad too ask Ben Grylls) that really have alot of history behind em.

Whilst I see the connection with Wetas.......I would have trouble pulling on a replica shirt with a badge that could be mistaken for a friggin cockroach
The Orcas, if we ever get a team here in Wellington, will be the name. Scorpions if ChCh get a team......and if they combine a side (6 games in each venue) then Southern Orcas will be the name, regardless of the hatred shown by some posters towards sea mamals

The more I think about the 2 location model, I think it would work on lots of levels.
Firstly, if both locations were to get 6,000 ticketed members a season, the club would instantly become the "biggest" NRL team in New Zealand....which would piss off our JAFA brothers immensly
Next up, TV viewing figures would rocket, given 2 City's with a joint population of about 1,000,000 (suburbs included) would be involved......so SKY/Fox would benefir from increased revenue through ads and dish sales
It would go some way to stopping or at least stemming the flow of Kiwi talent to NRL clubs who, in reality, are struggling to find their own talent.

If, as expected, the Western Reds are in come the next round of expansion and if a bid could be put together, then the 2nd NZ Franchise would be the only one on the table that would INCREASE FANS AND TV VIEWERS......
Brisbane, Central Coast, Ipswich etc etc.....would all look to Split Existing loyalties......

IMO that is!

Indeed. You're getting into the Wasps mentality. I like it.

Wellington Wasps just fits too nicely.

You have the transliteration there so it sounds cool. Like Brisbane Broncos, Penrith Panthers and Wheeled Warrior.
Wellington's colours are always going to be black and yellow. No other team in the NRL has those colours. Wasps are black and yellow.
The beehive.
It also has good marketing potential.

While I like the idea of using native NZ animals like Weta's, the Aussie market just wouldn't get it. Most people don't even know what a f*ckin Orca (sh*t name btw) is let a lone a Weta. Plus Wasps travel in crews. Everytime i've encountered a Weta it's been pretty much solo. One time one crept through my bedroom window. Massive f*ckin creepy bastard, which I had to eliminate. I'd rather have a team name which represents camaraderie and tenacity. Wasps is it.

No professional american sporting franchise (NBA, NHL, NFL & MLB) is named the Wasps as far as I know. I'm sure some random college team has it, but that hardly matters. I also don't think UK yawnion team names are relevant either. There's a QLD Reds and Perth are going to use that name again.

BTW the other name I thought of was Wellington Elephants cos it kinda rhymes.
Rhymes with what
See your point about the wellington wasps .......but you do know there is a very large demographic/political/religious group in the USA that use the name W.A.SP.....
I doubt our bretheren in the Porirua region will identify with WHITE ANGLO SAXON PROTESTANTS.........
Mind you...if ever a name told power or th mob to f**k off, then that would be it.
Maybe Wellington White Nazi RL would be an option :crazy::crazy:

Orcas, regardless of the "disney" factor are local, to all people in NZ....Maori, Euro or Pacifika.

Fair enough with all the choices that have been put to the table. Whatever the name will be we need to remember NOT to stretch too fast as having a 2nd NZ side could also make us weaker in the long run (as some have mentioned earlier when these 2nd expansion talks arise) I'm all for it just hope it doesn't cause more harm for the future.

The Welly Ele's? Ahahaha!

Surely, it would be the Orcas. I don't know what Hitman's problem is - penis envy?:)

Weta seems to have the alliteration, as does the Wolves ( as also would Warriors had it not already been theived). Weta also has that Welly film industry thing.

From what I have read, the Caketin is pretty booked up.
If you can have a cricket game one day and league the next at Eden Park theres no reason you cant have union/league double headers at the caketin.

I like the Wasps too.

Any jersey design using the Welly colours will have to be distinctive given that the Tigers have those colours too.

I'm sold on the Wasps. Though we would all be sick of the puns after one game. Imagine Costigan let loose on that game.

On a serious note; I thought the stadium has a limit on the night matches per year. They must be close to the limit with the Nix/Canes/Lions/ODI's.
