Panthers in hunt for Feleti Mateo

With his price tag about to soar, the Warriors are no certainty to retain Feleti Mateo at the end of this year.

Negotiations are underway to re-sign the prized asset, but the Penrith Panthers are just one suitor to indicate interest, which could leave the Warriors locked in a tug-of-war for his valuable services.

"We've started discussions with Feleti and his agent," Warriors general manager Dean Bell told the Sunday Star-Times. "We met with his agent a couple of months ago. Both the club and Matt [coach Elliot] are really keen to retain him.

"It will come down to a personal decision. The ball is in his court. We'll respect his wishes that he wants time to think about it."

After shipping Michael Jennings to the Roosters - and shedding the majority of his $1.8 million, three-year contract - plus offloading Michael Gordon and Luke Lewis to the Cronulla Sharks, the Panthers' books are in a healthy state. They are looking to spend and Mateo, the Warriors' All Star representative next month, is a prime target.

Entering his third year in Auckland, Mateo's preference is to stay at the Warriors, but a move to the foot of the mountains - and closer to Sydney - may appeal if the Panthers present the right offer.

Former Warriors turned Panthers coach Ivan Cleary, who enticed Lewis Brown to jump ship, is another potential lure.

"I'm the sort of bloke that would never say no," Mateo said of a possible move. "I've worked with Ivan before and had a good relationship with him. Penrith being close to Parramatta is obviously another bonus.

"I'm really happy here and I'll give the Warriors all my respect and loyalty first, but if I can't work out a deal with them then I'll move elsewhere. But my intentions are to stay at the Warriors and hopefully I can get that sorted.

"I've started to speak to the Warriors and it's always nice to know you're wanted."

It's clear the Warriors have to significantly increase Mateo's contract to keep him.

New South Wales coach Laurie Daley is a strong supporter of the backrower's attacking genius, which could open the door for his State of Origin debut, after he switched allegiance from Tonga to Australia last year. That would only increase interest levels, and his market value.

One suspects the 27-year-old could be set for a breakout year. After a torrid pre-season, the former Eels star is in the best shape of his career.

"I've dropped a bit of weight, a couple of kilograms, and feel fitter."

Yep, sadly it does, he's one I'd pay big bucks to keep on. However, I don't have faith the heiracy at the Warriors will chase him particularly hard. It may be a harsh generalisation, but it seems Bell & co are more keen on dipping into Superleague for bargains, then should their price go up, let em go, then go scouting for more bargains.

My faith is still not strong! Although I think we will do better than last year. I'm hoping a few will be out to prove points.

If it came to a straight bidding war, surely almost no club could really foot it with us? Penrith have lost a lot of cap recently, but they also need to do more than just sign a couple of big name players.

We're gonna have some players who are due big upgrades soon, but with the way the cap is going and the fact that we're _still_ well under, I don't see us letting Mateo go without a fight.

So if he's due a big upgrade, and he's currently on the rumored 400k a season, what would that bump be to? Is he worth 550k? I guess we'll see this coming season.

Is he really worth more?

For me he is a ball playing second rower who starts on the bench.

If he gets an Origin call-up I can see him going.

I see it the other way. If he doesn't get a call up he'll think he has to be in Sydney to further his career. If he can get an Origin jersey from this side of the ditch (and it's about bloody time we had a Warrior make the MIGHTY BLUES!!!) then as long as we can match what other clubs are throwing he should feel better about staying.

Well he deserves to get paid more regardless for obvious reasons.

So if he's due a big upgrade, and he's currently on the rumored 400k a season, what would that bump be to? Is he worth 550k? I guess we'll see this coming season.

That would only be around a 75k bump in reality. So not much of a price to pay for the Warriors to keep one of their best players.

Not surprised to read this, good player. Just like Maloney they come over for cash or opportunity, make a name then return in a better position to negotiate. Lets hope he stays

The part where he says that penrith is clos to parra tells me that if we offer him a contract we could snag him. It's no secret he misses the eels

It'll come down to mates or the coach. As we will have the money for him too. Will be interesting

both penrith and parra have that.Dont forget the warriors already have him so only need about another 200k penrith and parra have to put up the 450 to 600k whatever it costs for him

He's not off. At least not to another NRL club. His Mrs is employed by the Warriors firstly, so that will make it difficult for him to leave. He is personally very keen to stay. The place, if he were to leave, that he has been talking about going to is France. Its a rac e between the Warriors and Les Catalan. If the Warriors have the money (and they do), the odds will be very heavily stacked in their favour.
