Parramatta Eels dodged a bullet with Quade Cooper recruitment drive

All we need to do is hang on until the new TV deal. Even Cronulla will be safe after that.

The game needs the clubs because if rugby league loses clubs it also loses fans. No matter how much sense it might make to cull the herd.

We don't need to lose Cronulla.

But Cronulla needs to stay viable.
They can do that very simply by moving to either of Perth or the Central Coast (Perth Sharks/ CC Sharks has a nice ring to it).

As it stands, with a hopeless leagues club and a shocking home ground, the Sharks are always going to be the club that 'holds the game back' - and it's not fair that they should be allowed to dictate the future of the game for the fans of all the other clubs.

If Cronulla relocated, they'll keep some of their current fans, and bring in a whole bunch of new ones (and might even be able to play a few games at Toyota Park each year).

Tony can you explain something I was just thinking about?

You must be a good bloke, as you support the Eels. But on the other hand you can't be a good bloke because you are a Queenslander.

It's a bit of a conundrum.

I'm not a Queenslander, I'm a New South Welshman on holidays and have been for 20 years.

It's not a good look when you gloat about how you are glad you didn't sign a player. I think it is very unprofessional. In fact I think that word, unprofessional, is used a lot to describe Osbourne.

"Eels chief executive Paul Osborne revealed as much to this column yesterday - and then added the club collectively breathed a sigh of relief after watching Cooper's defensive effort against the Springboks.

"We came as close as his manager at the time Richard Colreavy telling me to go to the airport to get him to sign the contract," Osborne said last night. "There wasn't enough time, and then he went away to South Africa and that was the end of it. He came back and signed with the ARU.

"Our coach at the time, Daniel Anderson, said then that he couldn't tackle and was of the view it would take too long for him to adjust to league.

"I'm glad we didn't sign him after watching him last weekend."

The Eels were rumoured to have offered Cooper as much $850,000 per season, although the real figure is closer to about $650,000.
"

As previously stated, "amateur hour". I reckon Ando would be so glad to be out of the joint. He did very well to achieve what he did, given he had little or no control over recruitment - as this moron has just confirmed for us.

Good luck Mr Kearney. You have my support, let's hope you continue to get that of the administration.

Cooper's agent returns fire

Auckland - Quade Cooper's manager has hit back at criticism of the Wallabies star in the Rugby World Cup, saying he had been subjected to unreasonable expectations because of his exceptional talent.

Cooper, who was public enemy No 1 in New Zealand during the tournament, has came under intense scrutiny over his performance in last Sunday's loss to the All Blacks but Khoder Nasser defended his client and said the Wallabies were a team on the rise. ''Those people criticising him should understand where this team has come from and see the improvement and the great job they have done,'' Nasser said.
''Not only did they win the Tri Nations but, in the last World Cup, they only got to the quarter-finals whereas, this time, they lost in the semi-final against a superpower playing at home.''
Asked how he thought the 23-year-old flyhalf had played, Nasser said: ''He went pretty good. From my understanding, you have to have a forward pack going forward for the rest of the team to go forward.
That is part of the learning curve for the whole team.'' However, Nasser said Cooper was unfazed by the criticism and accepted it ''came with the territory''. ''Usually, the criticism is all weighed on the guy that they expect to get the team over the line; the exceptional players are expected to do exceptional things all the time,'' he said.
''In the end, Australia was only two wins away from winning the World Cup and they lost the semi-final against a very powerful team who should win the World Cup in their own country.''
Nasser also ridiculed comments attributed to an unnamed player agent in The Daily Telegraph that Cooper's value, if he switched to the NRL, had dropped from $700 000 per season to about $300 000. He also took a swipe at Parramatta chief executive Paul Osborne, who said the Eels had ''dodged a bullet'' when they missed out on signing Cooper.
''First, they aren't Quade's manager; secondly, they haven't even got the balls to put their names and so, thirdly, they probably don't even register on the map,'' he said. Cooper is under contract for a further 12 months.
Nasser said his value would increase because of the World Cup. ''He was the most attacked player by the All Blacks, and you are not the most attacked player by the All Blacks if you are not a threat,'' he said.
Cooper on Tuesday received support on Twitter from former Test cricketer Damien Martyn, ex-Hockeyroos captain Nikki Hudson and Anthony Mundine, who is also managed by Nasser.
Cooper tweeted that he was trying to organise a television feed for the Wallabies to watch Mundine's fight against Rigoberto Alvarez in Newcastle.

I saw this spray from Nasser on Foxsports.

He sounds and looks like one of those old douchebags who used to stand outside the old boxing tents and talk up his dud fighters to see if some drunk from the crowd wanted to fight one of them.

Why anyone would pick this guy to represent them is beyond me.

Oh well, Quade blew his knee out tonight in the loser's final. I wonder if Nasser still thinks his value has gone up this World Cup?

One of the great shows......"A round or two for a pound or two - or a belly full for a fiver"
"Git up the ladder....Bom bom bom bom bom..Give her a rally....."
Loved going into the boxing tents and got to know the Brophys and the Bells over many many years (they frequented our Hotel when they came to town)....great people...great Australians....and great Rugby League followers.
Very generous with their tickets for kids who loved going to the Show, but couldn't afford the rides. Sadly the boxing tents have long disappeared from Country Shows in NSW..they were a highlight for their colour...
