Caught short down our right now, French is left 1-on-1 with the monstrous #17 who brushes the Eels' fullback off and scores in the corner.

Conversion is no good.

Cowboys make it 54-6

1min to play.

Cowboys make it out to the halfway mark from the kick off after spinning the ball down their left. We manage to hold them out to avoid any further additions to the scoreboard and that will bring an end to this bloodbath.

Cowboys 54 DEF Parra 6

But have you considered why they're suddenly garbage? Half these guys were regulars in last year's top four side. I think the performance of this year's team has been insightful about the gulf between some NYC players and others, and how it is the worst members of the NYC team ('jersey fillers') that are just as important to the team's results as the best members ('academy' prospects).

In order to fit a handful of potential NRL players (on anything up to $30k or more) into the cap ($200k for the top 20) you need a dozen or more jersey fillers on a couple of grand sign on. Those dozen players could vary wildly in ability, depending on where they're from, and how much it costs to get them to move away from their families.

A decent NYC player from North Queensland (say, a high quality jersey filler, with no realistic chance of playing NRL) might get offered $5k by the Cowboys to play for their team. How much would he need from a club in Sydney or even Brisbane to move down there? I reckon it would be at least $10k, and why would a club want to spend that much on a player who won't ever make first grade, just because he is good in the under 20s? That extra five grand could be the difference between keeping or losing a genuine NRL prospect who just wants you to get close to his $25k offer from the Bulldogs.

I was asking forty20 if he had changed is opinion from early in the year when he thought the 20s were a better team than the flogging they received in round 1.

I don't care for your excuses of why we are going shit.

Thanks for your efforts forty

If this club doesn't conduct an urgent review on the performance of this side and its coaching staff right away than we're not fairdinkum..what a disgraceful fall from grace from where we were at in September...

Laughable that with our junior base we are playing like this. Pou can make as many excuses as he likes but it's just not good enough. Whoever let Holbrook go to sign this Hales Numpty should be sacked.

He was offered an Nrl assistant role, hard to beat that. Maybe Hales needs replacing

Weren't we over the NYC salary cap by 30% last year? That's like being over the NRL salary cap by almost $2M

Our problem isn't that we don't produce quality youth players. It's that we can't fit them under the cap. We got rid of Lussick and Smith already this year.

As for losing Holbrook, he wanted a fulltime job with an NRL team, not an NYC team. There's no point employing a fulltime coach when the NYC players don't train fulltime.

To be honest, I'm not sure how much of an advantage a large junior base in the middle of a city with multiple clubs actually is these days. We can spend what we like on 16's and 18's football, but there's zero impediment to other clubs sending their scouts and picking off the ones they want (or forcing us to pay up for the ones they want). I have no direct contact with the game, but it would seem to me that the economics of the game have changed, even at the junior level.

This is a serious question, what advantage do you get from the strength of the junior base? Better competition for blokes like Dargan/French to play in? I guess you may get a better idea of the ability of the non superstars.

NYC role up against an assistant NRL role. Hard to compete and we would have had to have promoted him to match it. The current set up as Stagger has said needs a massive review in the next few days undoubtedly. Hanging on to NYC coaches with aims of higher accolades are hard to keep at any club.

The only advantage from strong local youth is for those clubs that have an entire city to themselves.

That said, the Panthers, Roosters and Tigers are strong every year in the under 20s. They must have some advantage, or just be willing to spend more. It looks like we decided last year that spending a lot on NYC was a poor investment after all, or rather that spending a lot every year was unnecessary once you get your fulltime squad in the state you want it in. Otherwise it's just somewhere for your under 20s prospects to play with kids their own age while they're developing to become good enough to play in the NSW Cup.

As I've pinpointed the other day, the problem goes much more deeper than just hiring an assistant coach..... Maybe just maybe The GM will no longer ignore the requests by Halesy for further assistance..

Well maybe we should go 1 better and approach the NRL about pulling out of the competition if we're going to cut funding and resources for our juniors...

What sort of assistance are you referring to? Across the coaching / management team or playing manpower or both?
