I reckon it was around the time when they went to the 10m offside rule, non-contested scrums (12 interchanges) and the flat form of attack.

Yeh fair point, though I reckon the really flat attack came a bit later (partic. thinking Chris Anderson's Melbourne). I think the scrums were really a farce well before, but the enforced 10m offside theory makes sense.

Why would it embarrass a park footballer if you were to say they were better than players in the Holden Cup? I'm sure there probably are some such players, but they would also be better than some players in most squads....recruitment is not a pure science.

Yes we are 12th, 3 points outside the 8 and 5 points from 4th. So it's hardly an awful season that is reflective of terrible recruiting.

Which other clubs have had 4 (or is it 5?) or more current U20s play 1st grade this season? Can't be many (if any).

I did say NSW Cup & NRL - off the top of my head - Wests and the Pennies.

I will name one : Soane Manumua (played in your premiership winning HM Cup side of 2009); now playing A grade for Wenty. He had temendous upper body strength and was clearly a better all-round footballer then Vai Toutai at 16 and 17; was still playing great football in Wenty's C grade (U19s) premiership winning side in 2011.

Could not get a look in your SG Ball side in 2011 - dont know why.

Could name half a dozen more but I wont.

Don't know that sitting 12th on the ladder is just outside the top 8.

We're only three points out.

The majority of clubs have had some of their U20s playing in the NSW Cup and NRL in the same numbers as Parramatta; it is a lame excuse.

The same numbers? Really?

We have had five under 20s players in first grade this year. The club with the next most under 20s players in first grade is Canberra, with three. Interestingly, both Parra and the Raiders had the most players in this year's under 20s Origin match (each with four).

Manly, Cronulla and Melbourne have used zero under 20s players this year.

I tend to agree. I think it is true that rugby league is more about speed and strength these days but the way some people talk about mountains of "natural footballers" back in the day is a bit over the top. There were also a lot of "natural thugs" that played the game back then.

True. Some blokes were picked in rep teams based on how well they could punch merkins.

Yeah, it definitely wasn't immediate but over time. Hence, the current generic forward (6 foot plus, 100 kg plus) - no need for a stocky no neck prop that worked hard in a scrum or a hooker that could win a few against the feed - they were worth millions back then.

I watched the game on IQ last night. It's amazing how evenly the teams were matched, yet Penrith did the little things right, did not miss the crucial tackles and when they made their way down to the attacking zone, always came away with points.

Was again impressed with Pauli Pauli. Made 154m and was by far the biggest metre eater on the field.

He's an odd one, is Pauli Pauli.

He's quick and with massive power, but he seems a bit light in his upper body. He reminds me a bit of Michael Vella.

He's 188cm (6ft 2) & 105kgs and still 18 mate.

Tranny was 6ft 3 & 106kgs.

You don't think Pauli will grow anymore ? Got any growth stats for Polynesian Islanders v Maltese ?

Aren't Polynesians known to be early bloomers? Or is that an ugly generalisation?

ZDC is a hooker and provides good impact off the bench?

Do you think jersey 14 should be reserved for the shittest spine player in the 17?
He came on last week with the score 28 zip and made an immediate impact. we had plenty of ball the first 10 mins and didn't look like scoring. He's the only player in the spine who looks like he could make it to the NRL. I would of thought the club would want him playing as many minutes as possible. He has slo played plenty of 6,
