Sure, but I think missing the eight is an acceptable season outcome sometimes. The salary cap means the strength of your squad is cyclical, and when the squad is at a weak point it should be more likely to miss the eight than not. Nine teams miss the finals every year. Why should we be immune?
Signings don’t ‘fail’. They either provide value or they don’t. Momoisea was a nuffy when we signed him and he’s still a nuffy, just like half the blokes in every 30 man squad. How much do you think we paid and how much do you think he’s worth? And if the values are different why do you think that is?
Every club has nuffies in their top 30. You can’t fit thirty first graders (or even future first graders) under the salary cap. Not if you also want some stars in the squad.
Moretti is also a nuffy. I’m keen to see where he ends up next year.
Under a 17 team competition, more than half the teams will miss the eight each year. That means an average club will miss the finals more often than not (9 years out of 17). Loser/winner talk aside, that’s just a fact. The question then becomes what makes a club average, better or worse than average. I’d suggest there’s a lot more that determines the strength of a club than mindset. Should we sign Nick Politis or Peter Graham? In fact David O’Neill is available now. Maybe we should ask him to come and be our king.
How many times have the Storm missed the 8 under Bellamy’s tutelage despite being one of the most successful clubs of the NRL era?
Because Momoisea was proven against grown men. Moretti wasn’t even a good reserve grader until this year. And in any case, we had roster slots available for the likes of Hands and Moretti if they deserved it. The problem isn’t too many backups, it’s finding enough merkins who are good enough for NRL contracts. We thought Loizou was going to be worth minimum salary and it turns out he wasn’t. And you’re suggesting we should take more such risks? If you can sign them outside the top 30 why risk an NRL roster slot before they’ve earned it? These merkins might need to be called up to first grade. You’re at least better off with a proven reserve grader than someone who isn’t even proven at that level. Moretti had done f**k all in NSW Cup before this year whereas this was Momoisea’s worst season since 2018. If you saw Moretti overtaking him this year maybe you should be working for an NRL club.
The Storm won a premiership before they had Bellamy or even any fans. They are built for success, with plenty of resources. We are better compared with a club like the Sharks or Dragons. Both (somewhat) recent premiership winners, but also capable of missing the eight.
How do you know they aren’t just very good decision makers and are very good at utilising the resources they have? If it were that easy then the Broncos should be even more successful no?
Well who are “they” and why aren’t they at the Eels, Tigers or Dragons? If they’re an inherent asset of the Storm then they are a resource. Who do we blame that we can’t get “them” to come and make decisions for our club instead?
