Sorry I meant top 17. Of course he’s top 30. Check the squad succession thread.

Momoisea was signed cheap enough that we could sign Ofahengaue (on probably half a million) and Lussick (a top 17 player) after him. The time a player signed has little bearing on how much he’s on. Likewise the duration.

Bacause we were able to play merkins from outside the top 30 in round one. In round four we played another one. Why bring backups into the top thirty when you don’t have to?

that's not an excuse to compromise on talent...

let's play the more shitter player as opposed to 1 less shit with a better ceiling player?

so I'll put it to you in this way, would you have rather have played Lumelume than Sam Valemi ( who went from canberrra to the cowboys mid season? )

Anyone know much about this kid?

Elijah-Shane Tapau - Other Eels site says we signed him up

our junior development and recruiting have been excellent recently, but in reality, that's what it should have been all along

it's going to be years before we see the benefits to our NRL team though so it's going to be a long wait

it's one thing for these kids to mature and actually make it into the NRL side, it's another thing to take that NRL side into the GF and actually win one

Given how much football he played at the Cowboys I’d say he was signed as their number five outside back. For us the equivalent (this year) was someone like Dunster or Russell. Next year it’ll likely be Harper. Lumelume isn’t even top 30. We used him because it was an emergency. The fact it was round one doesn’t mean he was first choice. Injury crises can happen any time, including in the preseason.

it's called lack of foresight.

I'm looking at you MON and Ben...
We understand how difficult managing the salary cap is, but the unbalanced and short of numbers roster is symptomatic of the recruitment teams attention to detail. BA is one voice and the rest of them can set things up, no mention of our team looking at Young, Farnsworth , Averillo, Crichton and others when they became available in 2022.

There seems to be a wariness of paying top dollars for elite players, as before, big clubs get things done and as what apparently is the biggest Sydney club by most measures we lack the competitive drive to get those players. As a last point, do we have anyone that can sell the club in the same way we see other clubs work.?

you simply can't fault our junior development and pathways program in the last 2 to 3 years ..the seniors however is a different beast all together!

the 'she'll be right mate' attitude after making the GF last year is inexcusable..

on Juniors the above plan is interesting and the PDF is good reading.

I can see why MON has stayed on and not taking the Tigers role he can see the club is heading in the right direction with Juniors. I give the senior staff 2-3 seasons to win a competition before you see changes there..

How do rep trials work? I’m guessing you have to be invited to trial based on your performances at junior league or school level?

Gutho actually earns his money though.
We don’t know that. There’s a maximum price even the best player is worth, and if you’re paying more than that then you’re paying too much. Personally I think our squad is pretty good. If we’re overpaying for some merkins it is well covered by the ones who must be on unders.
His impact on games without the ball is just as crucial as a ponga lighting it up on 1.5million salary.
I’m inclined to agree. Gutherson gives phenomenal output, and seems to be getting better with age.

So do we have more highly paid players than other clubs that recruit elite players , don’t think that holds water. The point is our 3/4 line is sparse of any so-called elite , speedy player and in most circumstances we should have room to make a play for a player to fill that role. There are people paid good money to ensure the club is competitive in the market, and build a balanced roster.

A club our size should have good, well paid players , but none seem to have made the current Australian team. So a club with our membership, sponsorship, attendances, facilities etc can’t aspire to compete with the big boys, then someone or more aren’t doing their jobs.

I didn’t say that. We have recruited some big earners and we have also retained some who came to the club cheap. The point is the amount of highly paid players you can fit under the cap is necessarily limited, and I’m certain we have hit our limit. This is why we signed Harper instead of Farnworth.

You say this but it’s been the case for decades, including at the end of Fitzgerald’s reign. I think professionalism let better structured clubs overtake our pokies driven success after the mid-80s. Look at the Roosters and Panthers (and Manly until recently): Big success despite f**k all supporters. Souths also have a huge fanbase and they were kicked out of the comp. They were only successful when a couple of very rich men bought them.

I like the winger from Flegg. I'm tipping him as my smoking for 2024.

The thing with Moimesea is we got him from Newcastle. He was barely a bench level player in NSW CUP. That level of player should be easily filled internally via our junior system or local talent. He would be on more then min as well. Prob not a whole lot more.
And I am sure we tried to move him on but unlike Murchie nobody was interested.

See that's what annoyed me about his signing, you had Hands/Yates/Moretti available but you signed Jirah externally it doesn't really give the guys busting themselves hope they will get a go.
