300,000 more apparently of our originally reported offer of 1 million. If Canberra were supposed to match our offer that they reported of 1.5 million they came up short.

Anyways, move on. We now have to wait for Brisbane to tell us they are keeping Corey Norman yet.

As for your gut Avenger, I would recommend an endoscopy. ;)

Might I suggest that our offer was more likely the $1.3mill he got then?

In the end, it's the way the system is set up to work, and unsurprisingly we're the first club to get the short end of it

Well done R69.

And crumbs... but at least now we're cashed up to go after our next target - either at teh Raiders, or maybe Heighington starting from Round 2 if he has a get out clause :sarcasm:?

TBH i think we're going to struggle to hang on to Joel Thompson. He's not as good or as young as Papalii, but he's a pretty handy player and would be a good addition to parramatta.

He's also not a shy quiet poly kid, but rather a pretty out going, loves the lime light type, so a move to sydney and being billed as a building block for parra might appeal to him more than Papalii.

Croker and Williams will be our next priorities, JT might be the odd one out unfortunately. For canberra's sake i hope we keep a hold of all of them, but the salary cap just doesnt let you do that often

Wow we are the biggest joke. Only way is to invest in juniors and poach the best up and coming ones by offering overs.

Seemingly we did offer overs and Canberra had to offer more to keep him. Not sure we are a joke but the idea that signing Stuart would change our fortunes in recruitment obviously is.

Hey Old Man - what if the lady only dated the second bloke to make the first one jealous?

She did

That sucks! I hope we get the engagement ring back.

We did

Although I'm a bit worried that you seem to know all about the "being dated to make someone else jealous" scenario Tony? Was that a dark time in your life??
Tell us how you recovered, and we'll forward the info on to Ricky + co. ;-)

Anyway I don't think we're a joke because of this. He wants to stay in his hometown and is also an idiot who jumps at the chance of some money and spotlight. Honestly don't want a guy like that IMO

Raiders will lose a bunch of other young players now, in a few years time it could really be a 'was he worth it?' Case

You could but I think he was holding our offer over the Canberra club to get more money. Over 400,000 for a 20 year old who has yet to play Origin is excessive and I'm not totally convinced our recruiters are quite that stupid. Maybe we were trying to price them out of other players or something.

So an ungrade of 330k + per season to keep him, and we get laughed at for paying overs..................

Herald are reporting that we are intending taking the issue to court.

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/parramatta-set-to-sue-as-papalii-reneges-on-eels-to-remain-a-raider-20130308-2fqt8.html

I suspect we might re-consider this action (if true). Even if a court finds he has breached a binding agreement, it's hard to see them enforcing specific performance (i.e. making him play for a club he doesn't want to go to) will result, and it's hard to see how we could demonstrate significant damages at this point.

Compensation.

Besides, if anything, the complaint should be lodged with the ARLC. They are the ones that ratify the contracts.

I really hate the idea of courts getting involved in things like this. It's like when teachers enforcing rules for a children's game of hide and seek.

No I would say we are being laughed at for once again making announcements that don't come to fruition. Now it appears we are going to further embarrass our fans by taking this to the courts.

Tony i know you have something against the current board however this just seems like an agenda on your part. We had a signed deal with the guy

If you read the article a "source" said
A contract is a contract - we won't be letting him go without a fight

while an Eels spokeman(who if you look at the article on the Eels website you will see it's Ken Edwards said
To say we are disappointed by Josh's decision to not see through his verbal and written agreements to join the Parramatta Eels next season is an understatement. We are building something special here and we are only interested in people who are strong and committed joining this organisation

Those 2 statements contradict each other and i'm inclined to believe our CEO over an unnamed "source"

To the club and the decent Parra fans:

Bad luck, the rule does suck and hopefully a new transfer system is implemented in the not too distant future. We've had a situation like this occur before (albeit it was only Nathan Smith), the club comes out of it embarrassed and with their pants pulled down. Kudos though to your management for being proactive & aggressive in trying to lift the club from the bottom.

To the fans who went off all half cocked & acted like wankers:

Suck shit, lol@pawwa, we told you so, etc. It was never really it doubt, the bloke always wanted to stay and was always prepared to take slight unders to do so. His player manager simply locked in what he/they thought was a great offer presented, insuring Papalii would receive a good contract regardless, knowing full well there are rules in place giving him the ability to change his mind.

As long as the Raiders made a decent offer instead of trying to get him on the cheap, you guys were no chance.

Compensation = compensatory damages. For the court to award us any $$$ we would normally have to demonstrate that we have suffered a damage as a consequence of the breach, and justify the amount claimed by reference to that damage. Can't see how we would do this in these circumstances (it's not as if he's pulled a swifty a month before he was supposed to start playing). It's unlikely that punitive damages would be awarded, unless it can be shown that there was some real crook behaviour going on to induce him to breach a binding deal. Possible I guess, but unlikely.
