By the sounds of it the Raiders had to pay him a lot more than they were going to so maybe we will be a chance to pick up Thompson who would still be a massive upgrade than what we have.

Yep he aren't a bad player and seems to be improving, wouldn't cost a lot either.

it's the point of the matter someone needs to take it to court to A) get the NRL to change the rule and B) stop managers using this as a way to get more money from his current club.

After this whole situation, I think that when we going into any future negotiations with players we are trying to sing from other clubs, we have it written in to the deal that they can't activate this clause if they sign.

What good would that do if the contract isn't worth the paper it's written on...

I totally agree. This scenario that has been allowed to fester has now become a farce.

Hopefully it doesn't take a court case for the NRL to realise that the rule needs to be looked at

I don't want to have something against the current board!
I don't want our fans getting membership packages at the last minute, I don't want them to sack coaches every second year, I don't want them to keep changing staff, I don't want them to throw away a million dollar a year sponsor that has been with us for a decade when they don't have someone to replace them and I don't want them to be making announcements until it's 100% done and dusted.
I'm not denying that I have issues with how our club is currently being managed but I can tell you that it frustrates the hell out of me. I also see a lot of great things they have done and if they could fix some of what I've mentioned above, I believe we really could have a successful club.

Mellow out. Things will come good. It's just football. Just enjoy what you have. The members have selected whom they want to do the job.

I agree with how you blokes feel,Luke Lewis did it to the Rabbitohs a couple of years ago,it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. The NRL hasnt done a thing about it,but then again they have plenty of problems at the moment. In the end you dont want a player to play at your club if is not keen to,

They wouldn't be able to back out after its signed, we have already had one agent say he has it written into their clients deals that they can't use this rule, so we know that it definitely is possible to do.

It seems a player is keen only if the money is right. I can't blame them considering the way the system is set up. Supporters see it out through thick and thin but I have to say my support is eroding at an alarming level with the crap that is being served up to the loyalists.

Yes, one can write anything one likes in a contract, but we don't know whether that variation to the standard NRL would be accepted if challenged by the player's present club in court. It is far from certain that it would hold up, given that the player's current club can argue that they negotiated on the basis of the standard NRL agreement, and the NRL current rules regarding registration.

The rule was changed from the June 30 deadline, when all contracts were binding the moment they were signed. Now we have this absurd situation, there's still a June deadline, but meaningless contracts can be signed prior to this.

Managers will always manipulate any rules to get more money for their players ( and themselves), that's their job.

Time to get over this and let it go.

Crap situation but despite claims it has never happened...

The Eels won't be amused if Papalii backflips, with the contractual back-out clause not popular among many clubs and agents. Five years ago, the Raiders were stung when Nathan Smith decided to renege on a deal and stay with Penrith
I guess it was the Raiders turn to get one in their favour. We aren't the first and unless they change the rule we wont be the last.

Most eels and raiders fans have been quite civil to each other during this. Even skeepe!

Lets concentrate on the footy season and improve then we will hopefully be able to attract players

Tbh the only way we can attract them is with big money and hope they listen to the stories we spin of we are improving blah blah blah

Raider 69 has been all class during this saga. Doesn't need to cop that.

ive tried to be civil
its a shitty situation. I dont like the rule. In fact i hate it, he signed a deal, that should be that, but its not under the rules. We've been on the wrong end of it (and thanfully because N.SMith is shit) but now we even the ledger. I am pleased but i still dont like the rule and i think now this is sorted (in fairness to my club's favour) it needs to get sorted.

Im stoked to have Papalii staying with my club but i acknowledge he did it the wrong way. He's made his bed, he'll lay in it, which ever way it goes for his future in 2016.

Shitty rule, im hopeful the league makes this the last time it's able to be exploited. Lesson learnt here on both parties.

So the farce rule is proven. If a court case is what it takes to get rid of it then I'm all for it.

:lol::lol: So clear that he signed a contract with Parra and hasn't spoken since

Bean

a) HE SIGNED A CONTRACT TO PLAY FOR PARRA - so that's a fairly clear indication of which way the man is going?

b) There is a standard clause in every contract signed more that 6 months in advance that allows the home club to match the offer and retain the players services (if the player agrees).

Just because (b) exists does not mean there is no way of knowing which way the man is going? He has signed for us, so his intentions are perfectly clear.

Bean

Contracts are not worth the paper they are written on. Especially the verbal ones.

Genius

Mate, don't fret too much. To me, that quote from Furner reads as classic damage control behaviour - he's deflecting to mitigate the [potential] damage to his brand if/when Papalii joins the Eels.

Bean

 @ Furner

Bean

Reeks of desperation. Like I told you don't worry he is Parra bound.

Bean

To the club and the decent Parra fans:

Bad luck, the rule does suck and hopefully a new transfer system is implemented in the not too distant future. We've had a situation like this occur before (albeit it was only Nathan Smith), the club comes out of it embarrassed and with their pants pulled down. Kudos though to your management for being proactive & aggressive in trying to lift the club from the bottom.

To the fans who went off all half cocked & acted like wankers:

Suck shit, lol@pawwa, we told you so, etc. It was never really it doubt, the bloke always wanted to stay and was always prepared to take slight unders to do so. His player manager simply locked in what he/they thought was a great offer presented, insuring Papalii would receive a good contract regardless, knowing full well there are rules in place giving him the ability to change his mind.

As long as the Raiders made a decent offer instead of trying to get him on the cheap, you guys were no chance.

Well said.
