Eight chairmen from Sydney clubs discuss tactics to overthrow ARLC chairman John Grant

DISGRUNTLED NRL clubs are going back to war with independent commission chairman John Grant.
Eight chairmen from Sydney based clubs and the Canberra Raiders met over lunch on Tuesday in a private room at the iconic Darlinghurst restaurant Beppis to discuss fresh tactics to overthrow Grant and blow apart the independent commission.
The Parramatta Eels, Wests Tigers and Newcastle were not invited because they are seen to be too close to NRL management.
Manly Sea Eagles chairman Scott Penn, the Roosters’ Nick Politis, Penrith’s Phil Gould and Brian Fletcher, Cronulla’s Damian Keogh, Canterbury’s Ray Dib, St George-Illawarra’s Warren Lockwood and Canberra’s Alan Hawke were all there.
The group appointed Hoyts CEO and Sharks boss Keogh as chief negotiator.

His job is to convince the other eight chairs to form a united 16-club line-up to force changes and give the clubs two seats and a voice on the commission.
Before Christmas the clubs had the numbers to bring down Grant and appoint two of their own.
It fell over when Grant met privately with Storm chairman Bart Campbell, Broncos boss Dennis Watt and the clubs the NRL owns to sabotage a plan that had even been approved by John Coates, the man charged with negotiating a compromise.
Now Grant is pushing for a secondary advisory committee with club representatives underneath the commission, like a toothless tiger.
Keogh is now talking to the bosses of the other eight clubs to try to get a united front.
“We were pretty close last time to agreeing on the best way forward,” Keogh said.
“It would be nice to get everyone agreeing on the right direction. The clubs need a voice on the commission.
“The way I see it — basically everyone agreed to the plans to renovate the house but a couple didn’t like the letter box. That’s how close we were.”
