the only reason for relocating the powerhouse museum is so they can develop the prime harbourside location it is currently sitting on

they don't give a stuff if parra becomes a ghetto or not as long as they are making $$$$$$$

I think that's an unfair assumption.

The Powerhouse Museum is visited mainly by school children and moving it into the geographical centre of Sydney makes sense.

In any event, Harris Street Ultimo is not exactly prime harbourside land.

Now they just need more businesses to abandon the city and have offices in Parra, as I agree with you. People are forced to live further west due to house prices and the further you move out the more travel time to the city just creates more frustration!

Baird was supposed to move government offices out to Parra but that hasn't happened, I work in the biggest state government employer and there are no plans to move anymore people out there other than the very small office that has been in Parra for years.

Businesses are reluctant to relocate west because they feel they lose prestige of being in the big city. Commonwealth Bank have abandoned Homebush for Eveleigh.......just as an example.

The thing with the "population moving west to afford houses so put businesses out there" thing is that companies dont just employ people from one geographical area, the employees still come from a range of areas .... so the problem then becomes how do all the people NOT out west get there - and the problem with sydney is the major public transport is all city oriented - eg. train into city and back out .... sydney has no decent transport across the metro area - theres currently no benefit to it

It is much easier (and quicker) to catch public transport to Parramatta from the city or inner west than it is to get to the city from Richmond, Schofields, Mt Annan, Narellan etc.

Parramatta is probably painful to get to from your side of the world but with so many people not being able to afford your side of the world they are forced to live out west and getting a job in the city just means you spend most of your life travelling.

I'm not suggesting everyone move their offices to Parramatta but it seems no one wants to as opposed to a nice balance.

I reckon they need a cross city train line linking hurstville -parramatta-chatswood

But sydney is so bogged down behind the times with transport that its gonna take years and money just to get the current missing links built

Mate, I'm on it all the time. Love it as well.
The Chinese bridges thread is amazing, and so are some of the High Speed Rail threads.
I too spend a fair bit of time on the stadium threads.
Nerdy I know, but oh well.

Do you post on that site suit? What is your username?

I have never actually registered on there - I just browse but I think I will sign up.

Agreed, seems so odd that they're trying to link everything else but that direction.

I find this fascinating. I am going on the Eurostar next month (Paris to London) which is 300km/h, but I've seen some trains in Asia that push 400km/h. I think Beijing to Shanghai ?

I've been on the Eurostar 3 times. London-Paris (twice) and London - Brussels (once).
An unreal experience.
Pay the extra and go first class. It's like being on a plane.

The French TGV actually reached a speed of 574 km/h in a test run once.
Watch as it passes under the bridge. f**king incredible.

That's a cool clip. I like the Shanghai train that runs on a magnetic field. Maglev @ 400km/h+

We're travelling standard premier on the eurostar. Whatever that means.

I see where both Suity and Phantom are coming from re: the Tower. Ultimately it will come down to the standards that those approving it are willing to accept.

SE Qld has seen more than it's fair share of large tower developments over the last 10 years. Some of them are immaculate and have added significantly to places like Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Others are absolute soulless shitholes that are virtually falling apart less than 3-5 years after they were built. All thrown up quickly and on the cheap.

Hopefully if a Tower is built in Parramatta, it is based on a sound business case and developed to the appropriate standard so that it becomes an asset that everyone is proud of.
