Because it is shiney and new and has gyms and pools, views, convenience to amenities, transportation etc ? Not everyone (cultures) wants a yard.
I’m as bogan as the next merkin and I don’t want a f**ken yard. It’s just more work.

I wonder if the arches of the viaduct are still full of homeless meth heads. Tragic when I was there last around covid.

Unfortunately, yes, although they aren't all meth heads.
I just consider them to be homeless, which makes me sad for them.
My daughter played football games there on the adjacent fields on several occasions. It was sad to see.
Standing watching the football, I tried to put myself in their position, wondering what it would be like to be living their life and not mine.
It was unimaginable.
I will never understand why in a rich country like ours, we can't do more for the homeless and at least provide them with a safe roof over their head and a comfortable warm bed.

From Matt O’S at the SMH:

How Sydney’s new metro line is reshaping weekend travel

Matt O'Sullivan

By Matt O'Sullivan
November 9, 2024 — 5.00pm

The new $21.6 billion metro line is enticing more Sydneysiders to use trains to get to shopping districts on the weekend, with as many people passing through a metro station in the city centre on Saturdays as during the week.

Stations near shopping and dining areas around Chatswood and Macquarie Park have seen more people file through their gates at weekends since the city section of the M1 metro line opened in late August, new figures show.

About 27,300 people are also tapping on or off at Gadigal metro station in the central city on Saturdays, the same level as those on Wednesdays – typically the busiest day for travel. The number filing through the new station on Sundays is 81 per cent of that of midweek.

Gadigal metro station is near Town Hall and close to the main CBD shopping areas along Pitt and George streets.

The average daily tap-on and offs at Chatswood and Macquarie University stations, each near large shopping centres, have risen on weekends and Wednesdays since the metro extension opened.

The number filing through Chatswood station surged 35 per cent on Saturdays – an increase of about 14,200 – to 54,800 tap-on or offs, while those doing the same on Sundays rose by almost a third, Transport for NSW figures show.

The number of people walking in or out of Chatswood station has also risen by 15 per cent to about 59,250 on Wednesdays. The station is the busiest on the M1 line for commuters switching between metro and double-deck trains.

Sydney transport expert Mathew Hounsell said people were choosing to travel on the new metro line on weekends to get to shops, restaurants and bars because it was frequent and reliable.

“People are treating it differently to heavy rail and using it to do discretionary weekend travel,” he said.

While the number passing through Town Hall station has fallen since the metro opened, when combined with Gadigal station, more people are using trains to get to the main shopping district in the CBD. About 121,000 people filed in or out of both Town Hall and Gadigal stations on Saturdays, which is about 12,000 more than before the opening.

“We know that people want frequent and reliable public transport on weekends to access social activities,” Hounsell said.

“Sydney is better than Melbourne because we have public transport that runs every 10 minutes on weekends, not every 30 or 40 minutes.”

Sydney Metro chief executive Peter Regan said the extended line was recording “very strong” patronage on Saturdays as people used it for discretionary travel. “It’s definitely inducing demand,” he said.

The extended metro line from Tallawong to Sydenham has three times the number of people using it on weekends compared to when it ran only as far as Chatswood.

On weekdays, the line records about 210,000 passenger trips, including an average of 67,000 during the morning peak and 75,000 in the evening.

Why wouldn't people want to use a fast, reliable PT system and one that is not beholden to union action at any time?? And why wouldn't they change from slow double decker's to the metro at Chatswood to get them to the city so much quicker?
It is no wonder the RTBU are going into overdrive and meltdown with their industrial action. A 21st century technology rail system is threatening their dominance of a 19th century rail system.
The Bankstown Line is 150 years old. It was built when steam trains hauled carriages.
Yet, we have facebook warriors and groups up in arms that their service to the city is going to be "upgraded".
Lol!!

Same, was there when my daughter was playing football.

I agree with you that that are some people who make the arches their homes, are house proud etc, but there were also times that the behaviour / body language of some of the people there made us all feel unsafe. There were being violent to each other in close proximity to us all and yelling towards the parents and it wasn’t pretty. One parent said that she had her rear side drivers window smashed whilst parked on WP Road.

I have done a “Sleep Out” in Cenntennial Park* were you rough sleep etc and it’s explained as a very complicated mix of addiction, community, mental health, autonomy and safety. Some flavour governments like to build accommodation for the dispossessed forgotten and some just like to leave it to the charities. The charities can only provide same sex dormitory afterdark accommodation mostly and that does not work for a lot of people for multiple reasons.

* No, one sleep-out doesn’t make me an expert. Actually just makes me more bewildered.

The cruise ship berth situation seems to be on the agenda again with News Ltd rehashing the Botany Bay gabillion dollar fantasy terminal.

We all thought Botany Bay was off the shelf but apparently not.
