Fatty was pretty much past his use-by date by about 2008. His style never left the 90s, and for a pop entertainment show entering the iphone/youtube era, he just got old.

but back in his day, he was the very best!

The charm of both the footy show and its hosts was that they were not presenters and the show had a more human feel. Others on the show like Sterlo, Brohman and even Chief would gradually pick it up but to me Vautin never really did. The players that would come on were also getting more and more media training.

I believe it was 05 when he had his fall. When he was off air and Matty took over the show it was a completely different feel. One was just far more natural and seamless in front of the camera.

I reckon it was kind of done by the early to mid 2000s tbh.

Fatty giving himself brain damage in the Sumo Suit is kind of like a good way to mark the end of the show as anything worth watching. It had already decline pretty severely from the Advanced Hair and Reg Reagan days quite a lot by then, but that was it.

think the Footy Show was at its height when there were too many off field issues ruining the interest in the actual games
As the NRL improved the Footy Show declined

Those issues wouldve been the Super League and of course that moment when Hadley blew up at Ribot.

Then the merger talks with other clubs around 99, I remember Blocker had an argument with Mortimer on air.

The Bulldogs and Storm salary cap scandal.

You're probably right, after that fall he had struggled for a period when he returned, lucky the show still had the likes of Sterlo, Matty Johns and Chief as they had their own segments and helped Fatty once he returned to take the pressure off.

But then after Sterlo had left, Chief was sacked and Matty Johns was punted for that incident in NZ. After that the show had really struggled, the Big Marn was ok, Vossy was there for a period before he moved to Fox, Slater was meh. They tried getting NRL players as regular hosts but some of them couldnt string too words together.

Agree with this, it went from the 4 regular panels to a different show very quickly. If you ask people for their favourite footy show memories you’ll be given moments pre-2008.

It's funny. I remember the comments on here at the time. League people generally preferred the aussie rules show's style and format more, complaining that our's didn't talk enough football and was too silly and try-hard funny ... but I live in WA, and plenty of aussie rules people I spoke to over here would watch and prefer ours because it was more enjoyable, entertaining, and fun to watch. They got to know of our clubs and players because they were a part of this entertaining show. Their's, apparently, was full of arrogant and smarmy people, huge ego-filled heads belittling eachother.

In general:
League people preferred the aussie rules show's style.
Aussie rules people preferred our show's style.

The grass is always greener...

I don't suspect NRL people were actually watching the aussie rules equivalent, but the ones complaining were wishing ours was more like theirs. And yes, we had that with the Sunday Footy Show, I agree.

To me, at the time, it was just amusing hearing/reading NRL and aussie rules people wishing they had the other's Footy Show formats instead of their own.

When I hear AFL footy show I think of Sam Newman being racist and unfunny merkins like Eddie McGuire and James Brayshaw. The grass sure as shit wasn’t greener on the other side.

My thoughts exactly. And I think Trevor Marmalade was on there for a bit as well ... as a resident comments comedian or some such role. I never found him amusing any time I'd seen him on Hey Hey It's Saturday.

A bunch of arrogant f**kwits doing arrogant f**kwit things for a show on Ch9 of a sport they don't even have the rights to.

And somehow they still even come back on for a once a year grand final show ... on a channel that still doesn't have the rights to the sport, while the sport that the channel DOES have the rights to doesn't get a grand final show ... despite being the direct competitor of the other sport.
