Penrith will be fine, round 1 is the biggest lie in any sporting season. Some teams treat it as a grand final whilst others treat it as just another game. The sign of great teams is how they react to results. If Penrith are bouncing around the mid table after 6-8 games then they can worry.

Penrith couldn't score points in the final three months of the 2021 season.

Still have the trophy.

They had a lot of luck in 2021. When you look at the semis final series:

Week 2 v parramatta without Mahoney
Week 3 Storm lost Welch and B Smith in the first 10 mins
GF V Souths without Latrell
Whilst they were always full strength

The NRL also for some reason completely changed the rules from the touch footy 38-24 score lines we’d seen all year to suddenly 10-8 score lines in the semis. Every Premier has a bit of luck and they made the most of theirs. 2022 was complete domination though.

No TPJ for the GF while Cleary and Edwards had significant injuries.

Latrell being out was a bigger loss for PENRITH than Souths.

Welch going down was fortuitous though.

We always had the best team on the field (I don’t count TPJ not being there in the GF) but weren’t exactly full strength. Neither Fish or To’o could bend one of their knees, Edwards had a broken bone in his foot and Cleary shoulder was f**ked and could pop at any time.

Definitely had some luck against Melbourne; the two key members of the pack going off (although to this day I refuse to call Smith a HIA) and the tries bombed by Jennings and Finucane. But against Souths (in the first week) and Parra (the second) the bounce of the ball went against us (for the first 70mins against Parra anyway, where some dodgy ref and bunker call kept it close).

The refusal to bin players at the end of the Storm match as the panthers held down to slow the game in the dying stages helped (ironic given how the previous year grand final went) and there was a late line break by Souths in the grand final that saw a hold down that should have resulted in an equalising penalty goal. I feel the refs were pretty gun shy on Penrith through that finals series and there were some very slow games as a result.

2022 on the other hand was a walk in the park for the Panthers and they needed no help to win.

2023 I think panthers still favourites by a decent margin. Soni Luke may well be the key as they don’t look like they will get the job done with Mitch Kenny at hooker. Also To’o has to go to the left side of the field he is their most dangerous player and barely touches the ball, most play goes left and when it goes to the right he gets cockblocked by Crichton.

Super courageous of the league’s most likeable player to tell the weak gutted dog person that he was being a weak gutted dog person

Who gives a f**k who you have to play. Remember half the Penrith team were playing injured. Dylan Edwards played a GF with a broken foot, but still we beat South’s without Latrell.

Lol please by finals time everyone is playing injured, you guys aren’t special

A fullback who couldn't train running for 230 metres and 50 post contact with a broken foot is pretty special.

Meanwhile we spent all 2022 hearing how Latrell was a huge loss. When he got his chance in the prelim he made 91m!

Gotta love the "Souths would have won in 2021 if Latrell played" narrative.
Is this the same Latrell that has NEVER beaten Penrith in a Rabbitohs jersey? He's 0 for 6 since 2020.
Blake Taafe is 1-1 in the same period at Fullback.

Don't get me wrong, Latrell can win a match on his own, but the Panthers know how to make him completely ineffective. We do the same thing to Trbojevic. Makes last week's performance against Selwyn Cobbo even more confusing to understand.

South’s prelim was close at half time until south’s winger decided he couldn’t catch bombs

Reading this tread takes me back to the best years of the Roosters and Storm. Everyone wants to pile it on but that's the price of success.

We won't win a third premiership but we're not done. Its round one and we will come good when it matters.
